Guernsey's Chris Simpson aims to boost world squash ranking

Guernsey's Chris Simpson says he needs to start winning more tournaments if he is to return to the world top 20.

The 28-year-old is currently ranked 23 having lost to world number two Nick Matthew in a close opening-round match at the US Open earlier this month.

Simpson is second seed for this week's St George's Hill Open in Surrey.

"I've been in a couple of finals of events this size, and it's the sort of size tournament that I've been targeting," he told BBC Radio Guernsey.

"To push my ranking back into the top 20 these are the tournaments that I need to start winning."

The $25,000 (£16,154) event does not have the top names in the sport taking part and represents a great chance for him to earn some vital ranking points.

He pushed three-time world champion and triple Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Matthew close in the US, leading 2-1 before losing the final two games.

"Nick managed to get through to the semi-final after beating me without dropping another game, so it was a bit of a measure of how I was playing," added Simpson, who beat four-time world champion Amr Shabana in April.

"I enjoyed the game and I didn't feel like I could have done that much more in it.

"I'm just hoping I can find the same mindset going into playing people around my ranking as I managed to find on that day.

"If I can play to that standard this week then I'm sure I'll do well."
