Oliver Kay, chief football correspondent of the Times, described the biting incident as "disturbing", writing: "Just like when he bit Otman Bakkal on the shoulder when playing for Ajax against PSV Eindhoven in November 2010, it looked like instinct - and that, whether you are one of the best footballers in the world or a two-year-old in a nursery, is a disturbing instinct to have."
