What is the NFL trade deadline and when is it?

The 2025 NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, 4 November at 21:00 GMT (16:00 ET).

Once the deadline passes, teams are unable to trade players to other teams this season.

Trades can consist of direct player transactions, player-for-player transactions or players for extra picks in future NFL drafts.

With only nine weeks left in the regular season, teams hopeful of making the post-season will be looking at any possible means to bolster their squads ahead of the final two months of the campaign.

Struggling teams may use the opportunity to future proof their roster for next season or clear any players off their books whose futures they see elsewhere.

The NFL trade deadline is similar to the closure of the transfer window in soccer.

Once the trade deadline passes, teams can still add players to their active rosters but only from free agents, waivers or practice squads.

Waivers are when another team has publicly listed a player of theirs to be released.
