All you need to know about Sports Personality of the Year 2024

Christmas is just around the corner, which means it is time to once again celebrate the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

This year's show will mark an incredible 12 months of sporting action, including Great Britain's success at the Paris Olympics and Paralympics, and England men's run to the final of Euro 2024.

Here is everything you need to know about the 2024 edition of the annual awards ceremony.

When is Sports Personality of the Year 2024?

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year programme will take place at MediaCityUK in Salford - the home of BBC Sport - on Tuesday, 17 December.

How can I watch the awards ceremony?

Sports Personality of the Year will be live on BBC One from 19:00 GMT, as well as on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app.

Gabby Logan, Alex Scott and Clare Balding will present the show.

The main award - voted for by the public - will be presented just before 21:00.

The BBC Sport website will have a live text commentary from 17:30.

Who are the nominees for Sports Personality of the Year?

A shortlist of six contenders was announced on Monday, 9 December.

The nominees are footballer Jude Bellingham, runner Keely Hodgkinson, darts player Luke Littler, cricketer Joe Root, Para-cyclist Sarah Storey and triathlete Alex Yee.

How can I vote for my winner?

Voting will open for the main award during the Sports Personality of the Year show.

You will be able to vote online or by telephone or by scanning a QR code which will take you directly to the vote page. The QR code will be displayed on screen during the show with all other voting information. You can use your mobile, tablet or computer to access the QR code.

In order to cast your vote online, you must sign in to your BBC account. If you do not have an account, you will need to register before you can vote.

During the live show the presenters will let you know when the vote has opened and give out the telephone numbers.

Once the vote is open, you can either dial to vote for your favourite, or cast your vote online. You can only vote once and must be in the UK to vote online.

What are the other award categories?

The other award categories are:

  • World Sport Star of the Year

  • Helen Rollason award

  • Young Sports Personality of the Year

  • Unsung Hero

  • Coach of the Year

  • Team of the Year

  • Lifetime Achievement award

A shortlist of three contenders - skateboarder Sky Brown, darts player Luke Littler and Para-swimmer William Ellard - has been named for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award.

Fifteen regional finalists have also been named for the BBC Sports Personality Unsung Hero of the Year award, which celebrates the best volunteers in sport.

The winners of those awards will be announced on the night of the show.

A panel chaired by the BBC's director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski, and consisting of representatives from the world of sport, decided the shortlist for the main prize and the World Sport Star award, and also decided the winner of Team and Coach of the Year.

On Monday, Sir Mark Cavendish was named as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award.
