  1. Saints 'naive' in latest defeat - Stillpublished at 17:58 GMT

    FT: Southampton 0-2 Preston

    Southampton

Under pressure Saints boss Will Still told BBC Radio Solent he felt his side were "naive" and conceded poor goals as they fell to a 2-0 home defeat.

It is a third consecutive loss and leaves Southampton in 21st place.

"We have bags and bags of talent in the dressing room but hard work beat talent today and we didn’t do enough to keep the ball out of our net.

"I know how it looks and how football works, as long as I'm here and people give me the opportunity to do so I will fight."

  2. A season record-equalling Saturdaypublished at 17:54 GMT

    Championship

It's been a goal scoring BONANZA today!

We've had 39 goals across the Championship this afternoon, equalling the opening Saturday of the season for the most scored this campaign on a single matchday.

Only West Bromwich Albion v Sheffield Wednesday failed to provide goals in today's matches but we won't hold it against them. (Although, their fans might!)

Add in Wrexham's 3-2 conquer over Coventry yesterday and it's been quite the weekend - with three sets of hat-tricks no less (Wrexham's Kieffer Moore, Derby County's Carlton Morris and Stoke City's Divin Mubama).

  3. 'We were not sharp enough for this level'published at 17:51 GMT

    FT: Stoke 5-1 Bristol City

    Bristol City

    Gerhard StruberImage source, Shutterstock

Bristol City head coach Gerhard Struber told BBC Radio Bristol:

"This is the Championship and I think the Championship shows us, and especially Stoke City today showed us, a face where we had a lot of problems.

"It's a really good learning point and a really good realisation of what's going on in this league when you're not on the highest level.

"We were not ready in our synchronised pressing, we were not ready to be sharp in transition and I think they deserved the victory on this level.

"We were not sharp enough for this level and the good thing is we have to learn, we have to reflect, and we have to be very honest with ourselves.

"Everything that can go worst went worst today, but Tuesday night is waiting and we have to do everything right now that we bounce back on Tuesday night with our typical face."

  4. 'It was as complete a performance as we've had all season'published at 17:47 GMT

    FT: Birmingham 4-0 Portsmouth

    Birmingham City

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies told BBC Radio WM:

“I was really looking forward to the match. I was hoping they could bring it all together and make a quick start.

"For us, it wasn't just a case of focus or thinking we have to win; it was about how we win and how we play. Focusing on that process and making a quick, aggressive start.

"It was as complete a performance as we've put together this season, and I'm really pleased for the players.”

  5. 'We played some good stuff'published at 17:44 GMT

    FT: QPR 1-4 Ipswich

Ipswich boss Kieran McKennaImage source, Shuttershock

Ipswich recorded their first away league win since April with their 4-1 victory at QPR.

It move them into the top 10, three points short of the top six.

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna has been speaking to BBC Radio Suffolk:

"A good win for us, two brilliant team goals and two brilliant individual goals at a big moment. Good experience for the team to go through.

"We had a good start and probably didn't build on it enough. But we stuck in and we knew we could build in the second half. Once we got the goals we played some really good stuff.

"Marcelino (Nunez) is a really good set piece taker. He practices a lot, as much as I've seen anyone practice so he deserves his rewards.

"The subs came on with good energy, we defended well and look a threat."

Greig: Liam Manning does not know what he is doing - period! Blame it on whatever - he is in charge and has zero tactical capability! Looking forward to the reset in League One now

Gerhard: Too many Norwich players let go/sold during the summer. Those brought in are no good. Only Kenny McLean and Josh Sargent seem to have the heart. Others are mediocre and that is polite!

Jason: I've always liked the look of League One anyway...

The Canaries have lost all seven of their home games this season under Manning who took over in the summer.

They end the weekend four points adrift of safety.

  7. 'It's not good enough'published at 17:38 GMT

    Southampton

Southampton are just three points above the relegation zone after defeat by Preston today.

We'll bring you something from head coach Will Still shortly as he has just faced the media.

Skipper Adam Armstrong has told BBC Radio Solent:

"It's not good enough - we have spells in the game but we're not doing it.

"We've had a few honest conversations this week but it's two sloppy goals."

On the pressure mounting on boss Still:

"But the pressure should be on us to perform - we're just not doing it right now, this league is crazy and we have to use all the experience we've got to get out of this."

  8. 'A statement win'published at 17:36 GMT

Blackburn Rovers beat Leicester City 2-0 in the Championship

Blackburn Rovers boss Valerien Ismael speaking to BBC Radio Lancashire:

"Today is a big win. A statement in their performance, especially in the second-half.

"A clean sheet away at Leicester is exactly what you needed, what you expected, what you are dreaming of - to have that statement win is something we can build on with the players, give us that confidence.

"This is the win were missing at the beginning of the season. We had this win against Ipswich. The same type of win so we know at the end what's happened."

    Sheffield Wednesday

    Henrik PedersenImage source, Getty Images

Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield:

"I am very satisfied. We have spoken a lot this week about who we want to be across 95 minutes and who we don't want to be.

"From the first moment today, we had a difficult beginning, we played a strong first half. It is a difficult place to play and a strong opponent.

"It is the first time I felt we were where we want to be defensively over 95 minutes. There are things to work on offensively we want to work on.

"Sean [Fusire] was fantastic today, how he always jumped and won his duels. They started to play behind him but he won all his running duels and was calm on the ball. Harry [Amass] had a really strong beginning, big respect to him."

  10. 'Second half performance was disjointed'published at 17:30 GMT

FT: West Brom 0-0 Sheff Wed

    West Bromwich Albion

    Ryan MasonImage source, Getty Images

West Brom manager Ryan Mason speaking to BBC Radio WM:

"It was disappointing not to win. The performance in the second half was a little disjointed. We rushed things and played a little bit on edge. Tough to accept.

"The first half for 25 minutes, I thought we played a really good game. We had loads of final third entries, loads of moments.

"I understand the first goal is crucial and the longer the game was 0-0 there was probably a bit of anxiety.

"The energy shifted and we need to learn from that and be disciplined and do what we need to for 95 minutes.

"Every game in this league is demanding and challenging; we had so many moments that didn't materialise and we need to improve on that."

  11. 'It's a huge three points'published at 17:26 GMT

    FT: Norwich 0-2 Hull City

Mike White talking to Sergej Jakirovic after Hull City's 0-2 away win at Norwich.

Hull City made it a nice half-a-dozen games unbeaten in the Championship with their lunchtime win at Norwich pushing them up to seventh place.

Boss Sergej Jakirovic told BBC Radio Humberside:

"I must admit we survived in the first half because Norwich were much better than us.

"We changed our shape in the last 15 minutes of the first half because we didn't control anything and from the start of the second half we were much better.

"It's a huge three points for us but we will analyse the first half because it's a 90-minute game and you can always improve."

  12. 'I'm scratching my head'published at 17:23 GMT

Liam Manning speaks to Chris Goreham following a home defeat to Hull City.

Norwich City lost a sixth successive home league game at Carrow Road and a sixth straight match in total.

Boss Liam Manning spoke to BBC Radio Norfolk:

"Ultimately you're tired of saying the same things - I'm scratching my head.

"I reflect on my performance first and you look at the first half and you have to be ahead.

"You get in at half time and the frustrating bit is we referenced they (Hull) are going to change - they're going to go man-to-man and we have to go in behind them and utilise the space but we don't do it.

"We just shoot ourselves in the foot by giving away, yet again, a horrific goal."

    On his future:

"It's the same message, you keep fighting.

"Clearly there's a lot that needs to change - we have to look in-house and change."

On going straight down the tunnel at full time:

"I apologise to the fans for that - it's not good from me.

"I'm hurting, it's not the right thing to do and I apologise to everyone for that."

  13. 'There is no excuse'published at 17:20 GMT

    FT: Leicester 0-2 Blackburn

    Leicester City

Leicester City boss Marti Cifuentes speaking to BBC Sport Leicester:

“A poor performance. There’s no hiding on that. We started the game decent. It was not a great first half, and we were 1-0 down.

"At the end of the day, we expect more from this side. We need a reaction. We cannot keep waiting until something changes. I expect much more."

"Expectations must be at the top. We are not achieving those standards at the moment. It may be a difficult situation, but I believe in my strengths as a manager. It will not be an easy journey. We need to get better. There is no excuse.

"The situation is not good enough. There is another opportunity on Tuesday. There is enough quality in that squad to get better results.

"I’m not very happy at all, and very concerned. It’s about putting performances into results. That’s what the focus must be.

"It’s tough for all of us, and for those who care for the club. We need to stick together. I will make sure those players will try their best. We need the fans on board. I believe we can change things."

Harry: Will Will Still still be in a job tomorrow?

Southampton have now won four of their past 51 league games. A remarkable state of affairs.

There can't be any complaints really.

Watford were really organised defensively and made it really difficult for us to break down. They thoroughly deserved it.

Unfortunately, Boro just didn't have an answer to Watford's defence.

Stoke are the big winners in more than one way today.

Their 5-1 thrashing of Bristol City moves them into third place, just one point behind Middlesbrough who lost at Watford and failed to take advantage of Coventry's defeat by Wrexham last night.

Millwall had second place snatched away by Oxford's stoppage-time leveller in their 2-2 draw.

Preston move into the top six with their victory at Southampton.

Norwich's sixth successive home defeat leaves them just above Sheffield Wednesday and they meet in midweek.

Sheffield United remain in trouble after losing to Derby, and look at Southampton, just three points outside the drop zone after relegation from the Premier League.
