Cambridge United came from a goal down to beat managerless Luton Town 3-1 on a busy night in the Vertu Trophy.

Leeds United U21 and Fulham U21 were thumped by Fleetwood Town and Wycombe Wanderers respectively, while Wolves U21 fought back to defeat Wigan Athletic with Mateus Mane's successful late penalty giving them a 2-1 win.

There were mixed results for the leaders in the the third and fourth tiers with Stevenage defeating Bromley 2-1 and Walsall losing by the only goal at home to Northampton Town.

Elsewhere, Rotherham United overcame a two-goal deficit against Oldham Athletic to win 3-2 after Reece James's stoppage-time winner.

Luton sacked boss Matt Bloomfield on Monday and their poor form continued as Cambridge responded to Mads Juel Anderson's opener with a goal from Glenn McConnell and two by Elias Kachunga.

Striker James Norwood scored a hat-trick as Fleetwood eased to a 4-0 win at home to Leeds U21, with Will Davies also on the scoresheet.

Fulham U21 lost 3-1 at Wycombe to remain winless in the competition. Donnell McNeilly, Caolan Boyd-Munce and Bradley Fink gave the home side a 3-0 lead before Farhaan Ali Wahid grabbed a consolation.

Wolves U21 recovered after Wigan's Maleace Asamoah cancelled out Thomas Edozie's early goal as Mane's late spot-kick sealed victory at the Brick Community Stadium.

League One leaders Stevenage continued their fine start to the season with a 2-1 home win against Bromley. Harvey White opened the scoring for the hosts before Byron Webster levelled in the second half, but Gassan Ahadme secured the victory late on.

Rotherham completed an impressive comeback against Oldham when James scored a minute into stoppage time. A second-half goal from Kian Spence and an own goal by Jake Leake cancelled out first-half finishes from Oldham's Luke Hannant and Reagan Ogle.

Newport County caused a shock with a 1-0 victory in the Welsh derby against Cardiff City with Thomas Davies' goal two minutes before the interval enough to secure a rare victory for League Two's bottom side.

Doncaster Rovers recorded a comfortable win on the road with a 3-0 win at Grimsby Town, with two goals from midfielder Robbie Gotts and an own goal in the 90th minute by Cameron McJannet.

Salford City made light work of Stockport County with three unanswered goals from Josh Austerfield, Jay Bird's penalty and Kallum Cesay, until Odin Bailey's late consolation.

Charlie Whitaker scored twice as Tranmere Rovers came back from Elliot Newby's early strike to win 2-1 at Barrow.

Leyton Orient also battled back after conceding an early goal to beat Crawley Town 2-1. Louis Flower scored after three minutes for the visitors, but Demetri Mitchell pulled one back before half-time before Aaron Connolly grabbed the win for the hosts in stoppage time.

It was a similar story at the JobServe Community Stadium as Colchester United came from behind to beat Gillingham 2-1. Veteran striker Sam Vokes opened the scoring for the visitors but a late goal from Micah Mbick and a stoppage-time winner from the penalty spot by Arthur Read turned the game around.

League Two leaders Walsall lost at home to Northampton Town after Terry Taylor netted an 88th-minute winner, while Luke Thomas scored the only goal as Bristol Rovers won at League Two strugglers Cheltenham Town.

There were also 1-0 home wins for Chesterfield and Reading against Burton Albion and MK Dons respectively, with Lee Bonis scoring for the Spireites and Jacob Borgnis for the Royals.

Port Vale took advantage of Benn Ward's second-half dismissal to beat Accrington Stanley with goals from Connor Hall and Mo Faal in a three-minute spell late on giving them a 2-0 victory.
