It was great to see the high jump unfold the way it did.

I thought Kat's jumping was great today and she'll be happy with the 1.86m.

Nafi [Thiam] and Anna [Hall] got very close to the 1.92m, but for me Nafi looked a bit rusty. She had the explosiveness over the bar, but the rhythm wasn't quite there.

So Nafi Thiam of Belgium and Anna Hall of the United States take 1,093 points each from the high jump - the second of seven events in the heptathlon.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson was fifth-best with 1,054 points, while team-mates Jade O'Dowda and Abigail Pawlett take 978 after finishing joint-seventh with 1.80m clearances.

Be prepared for things to get very, very loud on your television.

Qualification for the women's javelin is getting under way, and that means Japan's major gold medal hope Haruka Kitaguchi is in action.

The reigning Olympic and world champion is the face of these championships, quite unusual for a nation obsessed with it's distance running and walking events rather than being renowned for its prowess in field events.

The Japan flags are waved as she begins her competition. Little else matters when she steps up. What an atmosphere it's set to be for the final tomorrow night.

  5. Can Japan claim their first gold?published at 11:45 BST 19 September

    Women's javelin qualification

Japan's Haruka Kitaguchi will be hoping she can qualify comfortably in front of a home crowd as she bids to defend her world javelin title.

Kitaguchi won gold in Budapest in 2023 with a throw of 66.73. She also took the Olympic title at Paris 2024, earning Japan's only athletics title of the Games and becoming the first woman from her country to win an Olympic title at a field event.

Unfortunately, she enters the event carrying a right elbow injury, which has hindered her performances so far this season.

Her main competitors include Austria’s Victoria Hudson who leads the 2025 season's best list with a throw of 67.76, and Serbia’s Adriana Vilagos who set a national record earlier this season.

Whatever happens, expect to hear a loud roar from the crowd as perhaps Japan's best-known athlete at the World Championships enters the field for the first time.

Medal contenders Nafi Thiam of Belgium and Anna Hall of the United States can't clear 1.92m with three attempts and the high jump competition comes to an end.

Over in group B, Great Britain's Abigail Pawlett is one of two athletes to clear 1.80m - that's a personal best for her after falling in the 100m hurdles.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson can't make it over on her third attempt at 1.89m, so she's completed her run in the high jump.

The same goes for Kate O'Connor of Ireland and Sofie Dokter of the Netherlands, but Anna Hall clears the bar with her final go.

She and Nafi Thiam will attempt 1.92m.

    Women's javelin qualification

We are getting underway in the women's javelin. No Brits in this event, but plenty of global talent.

Qualification group A features Olympic and world champion Haruka Kitaguchi, who is one of host nation Japan's biggest hopes for a medal at these championships.

Kitaguchi returned a month ago after an elbow injury, so we shall see how she gets on with that.

Two-time world under-20 champion Adriana Vilagos has improved the Serbian record this year and is also one to watch.

Competitors have to either throw 62.5m or finish in the top 12 overall to qualify for the final, and the second qualification group will take place later today.

    Up goes the bar again.

Belgium's Nafi Thiam is the first to clear 1.89m, but the other four competitors in Group A fail with their opening attempt.

Kat just had the most increduble jump there, the clearance was huge.

That is what championship performing is about - you see the bar raise, you see your rival clear it, and you raise your game.

A puff of the cheeks from Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

She catches the bar but it stays on, and she stays in contention in the high jump.

With such fine margins - she was beaten to Olympic gold by Nafi Thiam by around two seconds in the concluding 800m in Paris, don't forget - that could be a crucial moment.

  12. KJT clears 1.86mpublished at 11:23 BST 19 September

    Over goes KJT!

The British double world champion clears the 1.86m bar on the third go, having seen Nafi Thiam and Kate O'Connor do it with their third attempts.

That's a personal best for Irish athlete O'Connor, who also set a PB in the 100m hurdles.

    Up to 1.86m now.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson fails at her first two attempts, but Anna Hall of the United States and Sofie Dokter make it over on the second go.

There are only five athletes left in Group A, after Jade O'Dowda was one of two athletes to fail three attempts at 1.83m.

There is the obvious physical exhaustion which comes with contesting seven events in the space of 28 hours.

But given the amount of time the heptathletes are going to be out there for, even just this evening, it really is going to prove a test of their mental stamina.

Many are keeping themselves focused between jumps by moving around and going through their run-ups while they have the freedom of the track.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson returned to her seat after clearing 1.80m at the second attempt and didn't look very impressed as she watched her effort back on the big screen.

Her first attempt at 1.83m is much more like it, though, and is accompanied by a smile. That's a great sign as this is certainly an event in which she'll want to hit a big score.

She has looked good in the high jump as well, nice and range-y with good flow to the bar.

Noah Lyles looked frighteningly good in yesterday’s 200m semis. Could definitely see him beating his NR of 19.31 in the final - or even getting close to Bolt’s WR in the final?
