Jazz Chisholm Jr. celebrates a base hit against the Orioles.
Despite an impressive run of form the Yankees look almost certain to finish behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East.
Nonetheless they are on course to secure a post-season spot in the Wild Card Series and could make it official if they can overcome the Orioles this weekend and other results go their way.
The Orioles have struggled for consistency all season and have long been out of contention of reaching the post-season for a third consecutive time.
But they come into this series in a unique run of form having won 10 games out of 14 so far in September including series victories over the high-flying Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres.
The sides meet seven times before the end of the regular season with this weekend's four-game series at Camden Yards before a final three-game series at Yankee Stadium to finish next weekend.
That gives the Orioles a huge opportunity to hurt the post-season prospects of their long-term rivals.

Gunnar Henderson of the Baltimore Orioles
Aaron Judge continues to lead the way for the Yankees. His batting average of .329 is the best in Major League Baseball and he is chasing another season of 50 home runs (he currently has 48).
"The Judge's" chances of winning a third American League Most Valuable Player award have increased with four home runs in the last week.
Gunnar Henderson is one of the men to watch for the Orioles. His 148 hits this season and .274 batting average make him their most effective hitter once again.
