Usyk cements legacy with points win over Fury

  1. Predictions - 'Usyk seems to have this momentum'published at 22:22 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December

    Usyk v Fury 2

Former world champion Sunny Edwards: "The first fight was competitive but I think Usyk won conclusively enough. At any time it is very hard to pick against Usyk, even if you are as big and as good as Fury. Usyk gets in the ring and is on a different rhythm, he's on a different engine. Usyk just seems to have this momentum and he's always making his opponent work a lot harder. I have to go with Usyk but you can't write Fury off. When you write Fury off that's when he does something he isn't supposed to."

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn: "I have a lot of history with Usyk but I'm backing Tyson."

British flyweight Galal Yafai: "I'm going Usyk again. I like Fury and I like Usyk, but there's one thing me and Usyk have in common, we are both Olympic champions, everything else I don't come close to him."

Super-flyweight prospect Shannon Ryan: "It will be the same result, Usyk by points. I think it will be competitive and Fury will bring more and be more switched on but Usyk will take over from round eight onwards."

Fury has to unleash the fury tonight to finish on a high. Usyk just needs to play the game and tire the old boy out.

  3. Fury is 'going to hunt him down'published at 22:21 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December

    Usyk v Fury 2

    Richie Woodhall
Former boxing world champion on BBC 5 Live podcast

Tyson Fury is the heaviest he's ever been and I think that will dictate the way he's going to box and he's got it in his mind tactically what he's got to do against Oleksandr Usyk. He was pushed back far too often and gave away ring space against the smaller man. I don't think this will happen this time. He's going to hunt him down.

Now it's time for some very impressive visuals.

Let's just get on with the fight!

  5. How much should we read into Fury's demeanour?published at 22:19 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December

    Kal Sajad
BBC Sport at Kingdom Arena, Riyadh

The intensity and edginess of Fury has dominated fight week headlines. At times he's seemed fed up. On other occasions, he's been locked in – keeping words to a minimum.

But then we have had the usual "rabbit" insults thrown at Usyk, and there was even a moment when he began dancing with some drummers.

I'm not really sure how much we should read into body language and demeanour. Speaking to trainer Dave Coldwell in the build-up, he said all the trash talk and hype in fight week should have no bearing on the result. That it's all for the media, and what really matters is the fighters' mindsets the moment they step foot in the ring in fight week.

Still, gives us something to talk about, eh.

  6. 'He's going for the knockout'published at 22:18 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December

    Anthony Crolla
Former world champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

I've known Tyson Fury for 20 years and I always liked him to be quick and agile but his weight confirms to me he's going for the knockout.

  7. Predictions - 'Fury on points'published at 22:18 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December

    Usyk v Fury 2

Scotland's first female world champion Hannah Rankin: "I’ve been tearing my hair over this one, it’s taken me so long to come to a decision. It may be a little bit controversial but I will go with Fury. I think the loss has really got to him. He’s training really hard and has the bit between his teeth. Normally rematches go the same way but I will go with Fury on points. He will learn from his mistakes and be super focused."

Heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma: "Fury can win but it's whether he makes the necessary adjustments. I haven't seen Usyk's camp though, I need to see both camps."

Boxing coach Dave Coldwell: "I wouldn't say it's a 50-50 fight, but I would lean to Usyk on a 55-45. If Usyk still has enough in the tank, he beats him again. He's very good at riding out little crisis moments and he's always done it throughout his career. He's been hurt several times but rides out the rocky moments. He will probably get hurt again in this fight, but he doesn't panic and knows how to handle adversity."

  8. 'It's bigger for Fury'published at 22:17 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December

    Usyk v Fury 2

    Anthony Crolla
Former world champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

If Usyk was to win tonight, what's next? Does he leave his gloves in the middle of the ring and walk off with this unbelievable legacy?

Fury has been known as the best heavyweight of his generation but if Usyk wins tonight then you have to wipe that out. It's bigger for Fury.

I'm not sure why the camera keeps showing shots of the drummer's feet, it's not a very high tempo song.

Have you ever seen the double kick drums used by Slipknot? Now that is impressive.

As is becoming common theme now at these boxing events in Saudi Arabia, we are being treated to a musical interlude before the main event.

I'm not sure who this guy is but he's shredding it on the drums to 'Eye of the Tiger'. I remember playing this at a school concert and got so carried away I forgot to stop when the rest of the band cut out!

I'm sure this guy won't make that same mistake.

  11. 'Did Fury balloon up in weight?'published at 22:13 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December

    Usyk v Fury 2

    George Groves
Former world champion on BBC Radio 5 Live Boxing podcast

Did Tyson Fury balloon up in weight after the first fight and this is the lightest he could have got in the training time? As the bigger man, you might be stronger, you might have better punch power but you've got to carry that rig around.

Usyk does have the engine to go all 12 rounds.

Daniel Dubois held his own for large parts of his meeting with Oleksandr Usyk in Poland in August 2023.

The Briton said he felt"cheated out of victory".

Dubois floored Usyk in the fifth round but the referee ruled the shot, which appeared to land on the belt line, a low blow.

Usyk regained control of the contest and eventually went on to win in the ninth.

Asked this week about the prospect of facing either Tyson Fury or Usyk next year, Dubois told BBC Sport: "I'd be happy [to fight Fury] but I'd love to fight Usyk after what happened in Poland and the history behind it. I'd love to get that back and do a rematch.

"I don't think he would say no to business. Money talks in boxing and it would be a huge fight to get that back, to right that wrong.

"I'm the world champion and he's got the other belts to make it [an] undisputed [fight]."

    Usyk v Fury 2

    Barry Jones
Former world champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Fury on points but I'm not confident on that. Everything points to Usyk getting the win again but I think Fury can adapt more.

  16. How boxers deal with a first defeatpublished at 22:09 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December

    Hannah Rankin
    Former world champion (13-8)

My first loss was so early on in my career and an absolute robbery. Everyone had me as the winner. I wasn't demotivated, I was just absolutely furious and determined to get back in the ring and show everyone that it shouldn't have been a defeat.

The most important loss for me was against WBA champion Alicia Napoleon in New York when I stepped up to super-middleweight. It was at world-title level and cemented to me that I belong at that level. I just needed to work harder and push myself. It lit a fire in my belly and I realised you always learn more from a loss than you do for a win.

It is literally impossible to beat Usyk at the moment, but if anyone can do it it's Fury

    Usyk v Fury 2

    Carl Froch
Former world super-middleweight champion on BBC Radio 5 live

Fury might try to come out and box and move but he won't be able to outbox Usyk. If Fury comes out and goes for the finish, which I think is his only chance, he'll come close but he'll run out of steam.

    I can't see past a Usyk win.

  19. 'Where is AJ? I can't find him'published at 22:06 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December

    Usyk v Fury 2

Speaking of Joseph Parker, IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois, who faces the New Zealander in February, is also ringside and has every reason to be keeping a close eye on tonight's main event.

A win against Parker could potentially set Dubois up for a shot a greatness - a possible undisputed contest against the winner of Oleksandr Usyk v Tyson Fury.

A rematch with Anthony Joshua doesn't seem to be on his mind.

Fury has the size, but I honestly believe his punching power is overrated. He does not have the concussive power to stop a fighter like Usyk. Where as we know Usyk can hurt Tyson.
