Guernsey's Commonwealth Games chef de mission says there is no guaranteed selection for Island Games medallists.

Guernsey finished in fifth place in the Island Games medal table, external, with 19 gold, 17 silver and 24 bronze medals.

"Not all the sports in the Island Games are in the Commonwealth Games, and the standard for the Commonwealths is much higher," David Harry told BBC Guernsey.

"So there's no guarantee just because you're a medallist at the Island Games, you will be in the Commonwealth team."

Guernsey have raised the standards for competitors wanting to take part in Glasgow and Harry said this was to avoid any embarrassing performances.

Track athletes, for example, will have to run the qualifying time for their event twice.

"The criteria is set by our validation committee so we assess what we think the competitors need to achieve," he added.

"We have increased the level that they need to achieve in order to be a credible performer at the Commonwealth Games, because the last thing that anything wants to see is a valiant, but distant loser."
