Lancashire v Yorkshire: Rashid boosts Tykes' title hopes

Adil Rashid took 5-117 as Yorkshire beat Lancashire in the Roses match at Old Trafford to move a step closer to winning the County Championship title.

The home side were bowled out for 314 despite Usman Khawaja's innings of 117 to lose by an innings and 18 runs.

Khawaja batted for almost five hours and hit a six and 13 fours before being stumped off spinner Rashid by Jonny Bairstow, who also held three catches.

Paceman Jack Brooks claimed 3-61 and now has 58 victims this summer.

The final wicket, though, went to Adam Lyth, who bowled Stephen Parry for 28, having scored 251 on day three and shared a county record sixth-wicket stand of 296 with Rashid (159 not out).

Yorkshire's seventh victory of the season - their first since 2002 in a Roses match - put them 26 points clear of main rivals Notts, who they meet at Trent Bridge next week. Meanwhile defeat by Yorkshire, along with Durham's victory at Notts, leaves Lancashire even deeper in relegation trouble.

Resuming on 144-2, the hosts were looking to Khawaja and partner Ashwell Prince to blunt Yorkshire's attack and they took the score to 190 before Prince gloved a ball from Rashid to Bairstow and departed for 40.

Khawaja brought his first Championship hundred for Lancashire off 178 balls, but Rashid struck again to remove Steven Croft (16), who was superbly taken by the diving Kane Williamson at second slip.

Alex Lees dropped Khawaja in the slips shortly after lunch, but atoned by taking the catch to dismiss Alex Davies off Brooks, who quickly added the wicket of Tom Smith.

Khawaja's vigil came to an end in the next over as his side slumped from 243-4 to 270-9, but Parry and Tom Bailey (25 not out) temporarily delayed Yorkshire's victory celebrations by putting on 44 for the last wicket before Lyth bowled the former to wrap things up.

Lancashire captain Glen Chapple:

"We won the toss on a good pitch and had a disastrous first over [losing two wickets] which can happen, but it put us under pressure from the word go.

"It's really clear what we need to do [to avoid relegation] - nothing short of two wins will be good enough.

"We've got to accept that we should be able to play better than that for longer. It's not the ability or the talent, it's the determination to build big partnerships that we need to look at.

"It's backs to the wall time and nothing short of our best will do, but sometimes that can bring the best out of you and create a positive mindset, and that's what we have to do."

Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie:

"I don't think we were at our best with the ball in the first innings, but the batting was outstanding. I was especially pleased with how we attacked the spinners.

"We just needed to stay patient. I thought Adil Rashid was outstanding and Jack Brooks has a happy knack of finding a wicket out of nowhere.

"It's a great position to be in, no question. But we've got Nottinghamshire away and they're a very good team.

"We're under no illusions - it's going to be a tough challenge for us down at Trent Bridge. We've got a lot of work to do yet."
