Glamorgan v Hampshire: Wood moves Hants closer to promotion

Hampshire edged closer to promotion to Division One as seamers Chris Wood and Matt Coles bowled them into a dominant position on day two against Glamorgan.

Wood (4-42) and Coles (3-58) made light work of Glamorgan, bowling them out for 172, despite Mark Wallace's 51.

After posting 357 in their first innings, Hampshire did not enforce the follow-on, openers Jimmy Adams and Will Smith (38) putting on 79 together.

Adams (91) helped see his side to the close on 175-3, to earn a lead of 360.

Hampshire will be looking to set up a tough target for Glamorgan to chase, with two days left, knowing that victory would see them promoted and become Division Two champions instead of current leaders Worcestershire in the process.

A draw or defeat would probably condemn them to second-tier cricket once more next season, as third-placed Essex would leapfrog them in the table, assuming they take 22 points from their game against Worcestershire, in which Essex are in control.

Hampshire will begin day three without captain Adams, who was caught at square leg by Will Bragg in the dying overs.

Top run scorer James Vince, who surpassed 1,500 Championship runs for the season on his way to an unbeaten 32, will begin day three at the crease with youngster Tom Alsop.

They will be hoping to push home the advantage gained from a Glamorgan innings in which six players each failed to make more than four runs.

"Despite Essex dominating their game against Worcestershire, Hampshire are firm favourites to gain promotion to Division One.

"They controlled the second day in Cardiff and, unless Glamorgan can improve on their dismal batting performance in the first innings, promotion should be in their sights sooner rather than later.

"Hampshire bowled well as an unit, Chris Wood leading the way with his four-wicket haul."

"Hampshire are well set now to clinch the Division Two title after dominating Glamorgan.

"Despite having a 185-run lead on first innings, Hampshire chose not to enforce the follow-on, chiefly because leg-spinner Imran Tahir will have a greater say towards the end of the game.

"Hampshire could wrap things up on the third day, mindful that some rain is forecast for Friday."
