Bangladesh celebrate beating England to reach the World Cup quarter finals

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza believes their first qualification for the knockout stages of a World Cup will be a stepping stone to further glory.

The Tigers beat England by 15 runs in Adelaide on Monday to secure a quarter-final place and knock their opponents out of the tournament.

They had World Cup wins against Pakistan in 1999 and India in 2007 without reaching the last eight.

"It's a great turnaround for us. We feel really proud," said Mortaza.

"We are really happy for all those people back home who have wanted us to make it this far. This is for you guys.

"If I go back, I think our problem was a bit of consistency, but in this World Cup, two out of these five matches we have been very consistent. Hopefully it will keep going for the next few matches.

"Obviously, the boys are really happy and hope this is one of the best turns for us and Bangladesh cricket will move from here.

"Back home, people were expecting we'd go through. But we know how difficult it was in Australia because we never played in these kind of pitches."

The team's victory triggered wild celebration back home and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina praised the Bangladesh players.
