County Championship: Gareth Batty hat-trick sends Surrey up

Captain Gareth Batty's figures were his best of the season for Surrey

Gareth Batty took a hat-trick to seal Surrey's promotion to Division One of the County Championship as they beat Derbyshire by an innings and 98 runs.

Batty dismissed Tony Palladino, Mark Footitt and Ben Cotton as the visitors were all out for 149 at The Oval.

Trailing by 247 on first innings, they had found themselves 0-2 as brothers Sam and Tom Curran each took a wicket.

Wayne Madsen (76 not out) and Wes Durston (57) added 85, but skipper Batty took 6-51 to secure the victory.

Having begun the match needing 15 points to make sure of promotion, Surrey picked up 23 to move to the top of the Division Two table and effectively make their match against Lancashire at Old Trafford, beginning on 14 September, a title decider.

It was their eighth win of the season and Derbyshire only offered serious resistance while Madsen and Durston were together at the crease.

They came together with their side on 9-3 after Chesney Hughes was run out and took the total to 95 before Durston became Batty's first victim, falling lbw after hitting 10 fours in his 78-ball innings.

Batty soon sent Harvey Hosein and Tom Milnes on their way to leave Derbyshire 107-6 and Zafar Ansari then claimed the 100th first-class wicket of his career by trapping Matt Critchley leg-before.

With victory in sight, Batty produced an unforgettable climax for those in attendance, having Palladino caught behind and then bowling Footitt and Cotton to end the match.

"That's my first hat-trick in first-class cricket. My only other one came for Yorkshire Under-11s against Lancashire Under-11s at Woodhouse Grange School back in the late 1980s.

"I think Freddie Flintoff may have been one of my hat-trick victims that day - he was certainly one of my seven wickets.

"Of course it's a nice thing for me, and a great moment, but the hat-trick is really irrelevant because it's winning this match and getting promotion to Division One that matters."

Derbyshire skipper Wayne Madsen:

"It was tough against Batty and Ansari, who both bowled their spinners very well and with a good pace, which made them even more difficult on that wicket.

"They also picked up both our openers with fine deliveries early on, which put us up against it right from the start."
