World League Five: Jersey ease to straight-forward win over Tanzania

Ben Stevens faced only 88 balls and hit three sixes during his innings

All-rounder Ben Stevens hit an unbeaten century to help Jersey to an 85-run win over Tanzania in World League Five.

Stevens struck nine boundaries on his way to 103 not out as the hosts posted a daunting 273-5 at FB Fields.

In reply, Tanzania were never up with the run rate, but Kassimu Nassoro and Shaheed Dhanani both scored 42 in a total of 188-8.

"It was nice to put runs on the board, but their chase never really got going," Stevens told BBC Radio Jersey.

"We were two wickets down after 30 overs and that gave us the platform and the ability to push on knowing that there were wickets in the shed to play with."

Jersey captain Peter Gough won the toss and shared an opening stand of 87 with Nat Watkins to set the foundations for a big total.

But when Gough fell, caught behind off Nassoro having been dropped a few balls earlier, Watkins soon followed him back to the pavilion.

Stevens and Sussex's Jonty Jenner steadied the ship, with Corey Bisson's 21 at the end helping the Channel Island side past the 270 mark.

Tanzania, who have yet to win a game in the tournament, never looked likely to chase down their target after plodding to 28-1 from their opening 12 overs, despite Arun Dagar's unbeaten 34 from, 23 balls.

In Tuesday's other matches, Guernsey thrashed Nigeria by 10 wickets to keep their unbeaten record, while Oman successfully chased 205 to beat Vanuatu.

Jersey face rivals Guernsey next on Wednesday, a match which will go a long way towards deciding which sides clinch promotion to World League Four in Los Angeles later in 2016.

The bottom three teams will be relegated out of the World League structure into regional events.
