World Cricket League Four: Jersey down despite one-run win over USA

Jersey have been relegated from World Cricket League Four despite a spirited one-run win against the USA.

The hosts needed six off the final over to win in Los Angeles, but Charles Perchard (3-56) conceded only four.

Opener Nat Watkins earlier top scored with 69 to provide the platform for Jersey's 249 all out.

Alex Amsterdam's 102 off 98 balls was in vain for the USA, but they were still promoted by virtue of finishing second behind Oman.

"I love the pressure situations, the tighter the match the more I get going," Perchard told BBC Radio Jersey.

"I've bowled some tight overs before in tight situations and I had the confidence I could get us over the line."

The game began with Jersey captain Peter Gough (32) and Watkins putting on 94 for the opening wicket, but they both fell to Prashanth Nair.

Sussex second team batsman Jonty Jenner made a classy 57 off 53 balls, but having been 205-4, the islanders were dismissed with 10 balls of their innings remaining.

The USA made a slow start in reply, reaching 29-1 from their first 10 overs after captain Steven Taylor was caught in the deep by Corey Bisson off Watkins.

Amsterdam was dropped on 39 by Bisson and went on to hit a six and eight fours, but when he fell to Robert McBey with four overs to go, his side still needed 50 for victory.

Rhys Palmer gave away 19 from the penultimate over before Perchard dismissed Nicholas Standford and Nair in the last over and restricted Elmore Hutchinson to two to long off from the final ball.

The celebrations were dampened though by the news of relegation to League Five, as Bermuda had a better net run rate despite their loss to Italy.
