Nice little start for Ireland, they'll definitely take this start. Jamie Overton will be flying it in and bouncing it around. It will be a complete changeup compared to Luke Wood's left-arm swing.

  2. Ire 13-0published at 2 overs

    Shot!

Great use of the feet from Ross Adair, advancing to Jamie Overton and thumping the ball past mid-off for four.

    Decent start for Ireland.

Luke Wood is a lot better than people give him credit. I'd expect him to keep the stumps in play here.

  5. Ire 7-0published at 1 over

Luke Wood comes back well and Paul Stirling has to jab the bat down quickly to keep out a sharp, in-swinging yorker.

Meanwhile, we've just been shown a shot of one section of the boundary - what is going on there? It looks as if somebody has forgotten to take it out to the same line as the rest.

I can only assume that is because the section that beyond the rope, is too wet?!

This Ireland team definitely are coming in very underprepared against a very strong England team, you have to put them as favourites. It is frustrating for Ireland, they've not played much cricket recently but they have been playing club cricket.

This England batting line up is very strong, they just keep coming and coming, Ireland don't have that.

  7. Ire 5-0published at 0.1 overs

Just the start Ireland would have wanted.

A wide first up from Luke Wood before Paul Stirling drills the first legitimate delivery of the match through the covers for four.

Anthems done, we're almost ready for the off at Malahide.

Paul Stirling and Ross Adair are out to open the batting for Ireland, Luke Wood has the new ball in hand for England.

  9. England's youngest men's captain 'learning on the job'published at 13:29 BST

Jacob Bethell says he will "learn on the job" as he prepares to become the youngest England skipper for a men's international match.

The 21-year-old will lead an under-strength England side in the first of three T20 internationals against Ireland at Malahide on Wednesday.

Regular white-ball captain Harry Brook and England's other all-format players have been rested for the matches.

His previous experience as captain has been with England Under-19s and Warwickshire's second XI. He has never captained at full senior level.

"I will be very chilled out, try to let everyone relax and let the talent take over," an unfazed Bethell told BBC Sport.

"Obviously it's only a short-term job standing in for Harry Brook so I'll look to reiterate the messages he's trying to take forward with this time.

"To lead the side is going to be really special. I can learn on the job without too many preconceived ideas."

England have just had a team photo, which nearly involved fast bowlers big Jamie Overton and Scott Currie standing on chairs in their spikes. Could have been carnage. Cooler heads prevailed.

This is just the third time these sides have played each other in a T20 match - and Ireland have had the better of it in the previous two.

They were 14-1, chasing 120, when rain washed out the first match between them back at the 2010 T20 World Cup before claiming a five-run win (DLS) in a rain-affected match in Melbourne in the 2022 T20 World Cup.

England went on to win both those tournaments but are still waiting for that first win over Ireland in this format.

Ireland have lost all seven T20Is against full member nations at Malahide but have come close to victory against India recently, suffering defeats by only four runs in 2022 and two runs in 2023.

Ireland captain Paul Stirling: "We would have done the same and had a bowl. It has been under covers and there's a green tinge. Hopefully our top three can get us off to a good start.

"We are going to find out where we are at. We haven't had too much cricket. Now is our time to start the winter and into the World Cup."

  14. Postpublished at 13:22 BST

England captain Jacob Bethell: "Just looking at the wicket really. It looks like there's a bit of moisture in it, we've got a lot of seamers and I just want to back them really."

On being England's youngest captain: "I had a couple calls with Baz about potentially doing it. I'm happy to be doing it.

"I'm only taking over for a couple games. The main thing will be to just try and carry on the momentum from the South Africa series and leave them in a better place where than were before."

  17. Ireland 'underprepared' for England T20s - Stirlingpublished at 13:16 BST

Ireland white-ball captain Paul Stirling says the side are "obviously disappointed" by a lack of competitive cricket this summer.

Heinrich Malan's squad welcome England to Dublin this week for what will be their first international fixtures since a loss to West Indies in the same format on 15 June.

Ireland's players faced each other in what was called the Emerald Challenge series this month, and in the Inter-Provincial Cup earlier in the summer, but have completed just three internationals since their series against Zimbabwe in February.

Such has been the break from international action, Stirling said the high-profile fixtures felt more like the start of their winter programme than the end of their summer.

"We've been under-prepared would be the honest answer," he said.

"It's nice to get together as a squad for the first time in about four months. We're looking forward to getting out there and giving it a good go.

"We'll need things to go our way a little bit, but it's nice to get together."

September cricket in Ireland was always likely to make amateur meteorologists of us all but, despite some worries earlier in the week, it's a lovely autumn's afternoon in Dublin today.

It felt like the depths of winter leaving Belfast this morning, but there's some very welcome blue skies here in Malahide.

We'll not say too much about the forecast for Friday and Sunday though!
