Duckett drives O'Rourke's first ball past mid-off for four, his sixth of the innings as he moves to 61.

He offers a chance two deliveries later, gloving the ball over the head of Glenn Phillips at gully.

The England batters run a single, then take three more of them off the back half of the over.

  3. Eng 135-1published at 25 overs

First sight of Glenn Phillips' off-breaks, as he takes over from Smith.

Only a single from it, meaning England have scored a mere 53 runs in the 10 overs since lunch.

More big bounce from O'Rourke, but that flies over the head of Bethell and keeper Tom Blundell for five wides.

And the New Zealand endures more pain from the following delivery, as Bethell pulls him confidently for four through mid-wicket.

Within three of NZ's first innings total in the blink of an eye with only one wicket down. 2024 England cricket. Not bad.

    Cracking ramp shot!

Duckett leans back to lift Smith's short ball over the keeper for four.

The England opener then knocks a single square and England now lead by 277, equalling the highest successful run chase on this ground.

We are, in case you've forgotten, not even half way through day two.

Me and the wife welcomed our lovely first born child into the world this afternoon. Plenty of tired looking midwives around here. I can only presume they stayed up last night following the cricket! We are still to confirm the name for our baby but we are leaning towards Jacob!

England could go ultra aggressive with Bethell opening with Duckett. Batting so deep and, with Bethell full of confidence, you get a low risk run at playing someone who could run riot. Plus gives Crawley an incentive to build again out the spotlight.

Just a single from this Smith over as Bethell knocks into the covers.

From the previous delivery the New Zealand bowler had beaten the bat, but he remains wicketless for now.

We’re being rewarded for staying awake here! First with some expert bowling and now with this attacking batting. Bed time is being continually delayed.

    Cut hard!

Ben Duckett smacks O'Rourke's final delivery past the diving gully fielder, with the ball beating the boundary rider to go for four.

    That's the century partnership.

Jacob Bethell is just the 10th England batter to register multiple fifty-plus scores at the age of 21 or younger in Tests and England's most recent since Sam Curran.

Bethell won't turn 22 until next winter so could challenge the likes of Alastair Cook (seven times) and David Gower (six) at the top of the list but doesn't quite have enough innings left to match Sachin Tendulkar's 20 fifty-plus innings before turning 22.

Just two overs after lunch for Tim Southee as he's replaced by Will O'Rourke.

Bethell edges his second ball past his stumps, seeing it run away for four.

    Wasn't far away...

    There's the half century!

Jacob Bethell takes a single towards mid-off from Smith's penultimate delivery, bringing up his 50 from 52 deliveries.

He's now reached the landmark in each of his first two Tests, promising stuff.

I don't entirely agree with Dean in Cardiff (00:43). I remember Alastair Cook having a terrible run of low scores under captain Andrew Strauss who kept faith in him and we all know the outcome.

A single brings Duckett back on strike, and he turns Southee square for two, bringing up England's century.

A nudge into the square leg region then sees him retain the strike.

  19. Eng 97-1published at 17.2 overs

Hmm, not quite an edge, but not quite in control of it.

Bethell slashes at Southee, sending the ball through the gap between the cordon and gully for another four.

He moves to 48 from 50 balls.

  20. Eng 93-1published at 17 overs

Two balls later and Smith almost has Bethell!

The England number three flashes at one and sends a thick edge flying past a diving Daryl Mitchell at first slip for four.
