Former England spinner on TNT Sports

If New Zealand do not have a good morning they are out of this game. That's what England will be thinking - if they can get two or three quick wickets it's almost game over.

England are definitely in the box seat. Day three the pitch is meant to get a better but the game might be done by then! England are looking favourites and New Zealand have a mountain to climb that's for sure.

  3. NZ 88-5published at 27 overs

    Trail by 192

After four on off stump and just outside from Gus Atkinson, he strays onto the hip of Tom Blundell and the New Zealander right-hander flicks down to fine leg for two.

The Black Caps are up and running for the day but the carry was still there for Atkinson, which will encourage the bowlers.

  4. 'An opportunity for England to practice their ruthlessness'published at 22:02 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2024

    Steven Finn
Former England fast bowler on TNT Sports

This is an opportunity for England to be ruthless. Looking forward to the Tests against India and Australia in the next 12 months, if they find themselves in a situation like this they'll want to be ruthless.

Earlier this year against India away they threw away some good positions early in Test matches and India came back into it and momentum changed and India won those games, but England have a great opportunity to practice that ruthlessness.

If England can get through this New Zealand lower order and then with the bat in hand, it is an opportunity to put this game beyond doubt in what should be the best batting conditions of the game.

Gus Atkinson will bowl the first over of the day, with Tom Blundell on strike for New Zealand.

A reminder that nightwatcher Will O'Rourke is at the other end for the Black Caps.

Brilliant crowd in. Here we go...

Bittersweet Symphony is playing again at the Basin Reserve and that can only mean one thing, the start of the day's play is just a few moments away.

The sun is shining and the players are making their way out to the middle.

A good morning for England could put them on the brink of a series victory but New Zealand will be fighting to get themselves back into contention.

  7. Bit of spice in the pitchpublished at 21:58 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2024

    Phil Tufnell
Former England spinner on TNT Sports

Brydon Carse really impressed on day one, just by holding that really heavy length outside off stump and let the pitch do a little bit for him.

With 15 wickets falling on day one. There's just a little bit of spice in the pitch will encourage the England bowlers on day two.

  8. An intriguing pitchpublished at 21:57 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2024

    Sir Alastair Cook
    Ex-England captain on TNT Sports

So far it's been cricket played very quickly and the game has moved forward, but this is a brilliant cricket pitch. There's plenty in it for the bowlers, who got rewarded but if you miss there are areas you can score on.

It's an intriguing pitch. Historically it's one that gets better on days two and three. Once that green grass goes it does seem to become good to bat on.

But when England have hit the pitch hard they did find some uneven bounce. A few balls did fly through and it's unlikely that will get better. Uneven bounce doesn't suddenly just disappear. That bodes well for England.

  9. Postpublished at 21:56 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2024

The England batters will hope to have their second go on this Wellington surface soon enough but, first up this morning, it will be the bowlers trying to make their mark.

New Zealand are in real trouble at 86-5 and England's seamers will hope there is still enough in the pitch to help them get through the lower order quickly.

  10. 'Pope needs to stay in the middle order'published at 21:55 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2024

    Steven Finn
Former England fast bowler on the TMS podcast

Ollie Pope is a better player at number six compared to number three, that is just how it is.

He's clearly plugged a hole at number three when England needed him too, in order to make sure he continued to play in the Test team.

He is a brilliant player and he is someone who should be playing in the Test team. He is definitely one of the best six batters in the country, but he's a far better player at six.

The way he plays and the proactiveness that he shows, it is difficult to do that against the nipping new ball if he comes in at three.

My solution to the problem when Jamie Smith returns is putting Joe Root to three, Harry Brook to four, Pope at five, Ben Stokes at six and Smith at seven.

That is the way I would go about it and it puts players more into their natural positions.

There's no doubt Harry Brook was the standout batter again for England but he received excellent support from Ollie Pope to help the visitors recover from 43-4.

Pope, batting at six again, made 66 and another good innings will only add to calls for England to rejig their batting line-up long-term...

Another Test away day for England, another Harry Brook century. The Yorkshireman now has seven Test hundreds overseas and yesterday's was up there with his very best.

He was coached by former professional cricketer Martin Speight during his schooldays and he has spoken to Sportsday about that time and what it is like seeing Brook shine for England...

"He’s fulfilling all the talent and hard work he’s put in.

"He was an incredibly talented player even then – brilliant off his pads, good against a short ball. But he had a work ethic back then that he still has now. He works and works and works.

"The great thing about Harry is that he doesn’t really carry baggage around with him, so if he fails – as he did at school obviously, made mistakes – he doesn’t really carry that on to the next innings.

"It’s very noticeable that he seems comfortable when he plays."

  13. 'A pitch where things can happen very quickly'published at 21:50 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2024

Former England fast bowler on the TMS podcast

    England will be delighted.

Their hearts would have been in their mouths at one stage when they had the ball in hand, but on a pitch like this it feels like things can happen very quickly.

It looks sedate for a little while, but it can look incredibly difficult when a new batter comes in and it looks like there is a delivery with your name on it.

After an all-action day one at the Basin Reserve, day two has a lot to live up to.

But given the way both England and New Zealand go about their cricket, there's every chance of another enthralling day's play.

Where are we up to? Well, the basic facts are these.

England were put in to bat and posted 280, with Harry Brook making a brilliant 123, before reducing the Black Caps to 86-5 at stumps.

Five first-innings wickets for the tourists still to get and they lead by 194.
