So Afghanistan have pulled off an enormous victory over Australia in the Caribbean at the T20 World Cup and have given themselves a great chance of reaching the semi-finals in the process.

England are hoping to qualify for the semi-finals themselves later today.

In order to do so, they must beat USA in their final Super 8s match and hope that South Africa beat the West Indies.

Chasing 149 to book a place in the T20 World Cup semi-finals, Australia were 0-1, 16-2 and 32-3 inside the opening six overs as Afghanistan applied early pressure on an Australia side who had an 100% record going into this match at this World Cup.

Glenn Maxwell looked to take Australia all the way on his own but was dismissed for 59 by Gulbadin Naib, with Afghanistan's eighth bowler taking four wickets in as many overs.

With four balls to spare, Afghanistan bowled Australia out for 127, having been 106-5 before Maxwell departed.

It means Afghanistan can still qualify for the semi-finals, should India beat Australia and they beat Bangladesh, plus net-run-rate works in their favour.

Meanwhile, Australia have to beat India or hope Afghanistan lose to Bangladesh in order to reach the last four.

If you're just joining us, Afghanistan have beaten Australia by 21 runs in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

At the toss, Australia captain Mitchell Marsh opted to bowl first, despite all previous three matches at the ground resulting in victory for the side batting first.

Afghanistan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran put on an opening stand of 118, before a flurry of wickets in the final four overs reduced Afghanistan to 148-6.

Among those was a second hat-trick in as many appearances for Pat Cummins.

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan: "It's a massive win for us as a team and as a nation. In a World Cup to beat champions is a great feeling and it is something we have missed. I'm super happy with the guys to deliver the win.

"It was very important for us to go back to the same playing 11, but it was more with going back to the opposition line-up. We were happy to have the same playing 11 as the group stages. It was a top effort.

On the pitch: "In our mind, 140 was a good effort. This is what this wicket was all about. I think we struggled at the end, but the opening partnership gave us the best chance. On this wicket, anything 130 plus, we were capable of defending. We just had to keep calm and believe.

On Gulbadin Naib's four wickets: "The beauty of this team is having so many all-rounders. Whenever you give him the ball, he is happy to receive it and he will be happy to receive.

On the significance of the win: "It's so important for us and back home. People in Afghanistan are badly missing this win and I'm sure they are proud of us. It just the beginning for us and we have every chance of making the semis."

I think Australia made a massive blunder by winning the toss and not batting first.

They've got a lot of things to worry about, especially because they play India in the next game.

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh: "They got 20 too many. We were outplayed tonight. I don't think it was won or lost at the toss, I was more than happy to bowl first. It was an off night for us in the field and we own that. It's clear now - we need to win against India and what a challenge that is."

Kumaran: There is a feisty attitude about Afghanistan's players akin to Sri Lanka in the 1996 World Cup. I really wouldn't fancy facing them in the rest of the tournament.

Afghanistan bowler and player of the match Gulbadin Naib: "We've been waiting for a long time, it's a great moment for me, my nation, my people. I have no words to say, thanks to our fans. Our cricket journey is down to great teamwork and we have worked so hard in the last two months.

On his four wickets: "The wicket is not easy to bat on. The ball was bouncy at the start of our innings. Thank god Rashid trust me. Not only I bowled well, the whole team did. Our openers gave us a great start.

On the achievement for Afghanistan: "It's a great achievement for cricket in Afghanistan. In the last 10 years, we've achieved a lot. In the last World Cup we achieved, we beat New Zealand in the first round and now Australia, world champions. Our journey starts now. We're very lucky to have a team like this.

On facing Bangladesh: "At the start of the tournament, we just focused on each game. We played well in the first round. Bangladesh is a good team, we can rest tomorrow."
