This is a lovely batting wicket.

England are clearly trying to attack Mohammad Nabi as Ben Duckett smashes one past cover before Joe Root reverse sweeps for four more.

It's a little more effective than Jamie Smith's attempt from a couple of overs ago...

There's not much swing on offer. We saw a bit earlier from Mark Wood and Jofra Archer but it's gone dead now.

  4. Eng 43-2published at 8 overs

Too full from Azmatullah Omarzai and Joe Root doesn't miss out, flicking the ball past square leg for four.

    Classy as ever.

It was an excellent innings from Ibrahim Zadran earlier. A real good example of how to pace yourself in this format.

    It's all going on.

Joe Root drives through the covers to get off the mark with a boundary, before Ben Duckett gets away with one, giving himself room outside leg stump and slashing wildly across the line. It just misses the stumps and goes through the keeper for four byes.

    Blimey.

I think Jamie Smith was trying to take Mohammad Nabi by surprise. This is a long game, they've got time and he decides to do that on the first ball. He's sliced it horrendously in the air, it's not looking good.

    Smith c Azmatullah b Nabi 9 (Eng 30-2)

    A shocker.

Jamie Smith will not enjoy watching this one back. He skips down the pitch to Mohammad Nabi's first ball, takes a wild hack and slices it straight to point off the outside edge.

That is soft. The noise levels have just ramped up even more.

Azmatullah Omarzai gets a little carried away and drifts on to the pads for Jamie Smith to clip effortlessly for four more.

It's still a pretty noisy crowd in Lahore in favour of Afghanistan. England are under the pump.

Most of these bowlers aren't used to ODIs. In T20, they only have to bowl four good overs. Bowling 10 overs is a challenge for them.

    Well, that's something.

Smith gets off the mark with an exquisite punch through the covers for four.

It's characteristically frustrating from Phil Salt. He played three or four good shots and then he's out.

It was not a pretty shot. It was a heave against a straight ball.

    Salt b Omarzai 12 (Eng 19-1)

    Oh dear.

Phil Salt shakes his head furiously as he departs, having completely misjudged a good-length delivery from Omarzai.

He tries to pull, thinking the ball is shorter than it actually is, and it just clips off stump.

An early setback for England and Afghanistan are buzzing in the field now.

Afghanistan have learned quickly from England's mistakes with the ball as they look to take the pace off, even in these early overs.

Phil Salt gets lucky as he edges one just past his stumps before Ben Duckett clips a slower delivery out to deep mid-wicket for a couple.

Ben Duckett picks up where he left off after his 165 against Australia, gloriously driving Azmatullah Omarzai through the covers to get off the mark.

Afghanistan have won seven ODIs and lost just two while defending a 300+ total. Good news for England is that three totals over 300 have been chased down in Lahore in the last three years, with two of them coming in the last two ODIs in Lahore. New Zealand chased down 305 against South Africa in the tri-series while Australia chased down 352 against England four days ago.

    Four more!

A punch through the covers from Phil Salt also races to the boundary, and England have started positively here.
