Afghanistan absolutely deserve that win, they held their nerve. They were desperate and they got there.

Azmat was fantastic, he won't get player of the match because of Ibrahim Zadran's innings but he does deserve so much credit.

Joe Root played a magnificent innings but he just didn't get enough support from elsewhere. Afghanistan still have a mountain to climb themselves, they've got to beat Australia, but they still have a chance - England don't.

  3. 'I don't want to make any emotional statements right now'published at 17:49 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

England captain Jos Buttler: "To be eliminated from the tournament, it's really disappointing. We had our chances in the game, it was another fantastic game. We're gutted to come out the other side.

"Joe Root played an unbelievable innings. We needed another top six batter to stay out there and take it deeper. It looked like we were going to get there in the end, the last 10 overs got away from us. They got away from us there in the last 10 overs, credit to Ibrahim who played a fantastic innings. If we reflect, they got 113 off the last 10 overs."

On Mark Wood: "Unfortunately, his left knee went in the fourth over. He bowled through a lot of pain to bowl more. He showed a lot of character. He'll be assessed."

On having to change the bowling: "It was difficult. Livingstone went over his ankle. It was difficult but I tried to use our best resources to break their partnerships."

On Joe Root: "He's been brilliant in all formats, he played an unbelievable innings, showed a lot of character. If one of us in the top six could've stayed with him, we would've got over tonight."

On his recent form: "If I knew, I wouldn't be playing the way I am. I don't feel far way, it's disappointing when you're not reaching the level of the best in the world."

On his future: "I don't want to say any emotional statements right now. For myself and the guys at the top, we should consider all possibilities."

Afghanistan's 286 runs scored between overs 11-50 is the second-most by any team in ODI history after having lost three or more wickets while scoring 40 or less at the end of the first 10 overs.

England were 86-14 ahead on WinViz at that point.

  5. 'We are improving day by day'published at 17:44 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi: "As a team we are happy. I know the whole nation will be happy. We'll look towards the the next game.

"First time we beat England was in the 2023 World Cup. I keep saying that we are improving day by day as a team, we’ve shown it. I’m happy with the result."

On Ibrahim Zadran: "He's brilliant. Talented guy. When we were three down at the beginning, there was a lot of pressure, the partnership was crucial. It was one of the best ODI innings I’ve seen. Azmat played with good intent, batted good, bowled well for us."

On Mohammed Nabi: "The beauty of our team is that we have talented youngsters and some seniors. The good thing is that everyone knows their own role. Everyone is doing good, hopefully we take this momentum into our game with Australia.

"It will give us confidence. It will be a new day for each team, we take things simple. We’ll focus on the ground and try and do what’s good for us.

  6. 'Buttler a better player without captaincy'published at 17:42 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

England don't play much 50-over cricket, the odd bilateral series, but it rarely has a huge amount of significance on it.

It feels inevitable that England will have to look elsewhere for captaincy. It might be freeing for Jos Buttler, to find some form without the captaincy.

He is a better player without it and he can go back to being the destructive batsman he is.

  7. 'It's special' - Ibrahim on centurypublished at 17:39 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

Player of the match Ibrahim Zadran: "I was expecting, I wanted to get one good catch for the team. I batted 50 overs, I wanted to spend time out there."

On scoring 177: "It means a lot to me. I trusted myself, I wanted to go for longer. Whenever I batted, I just wanted to go for longer, it's special."

"We've played here before, I just wanted to take my time, play proper cricketing shots and it worked so I'm happy with that. When you win a game, it gives you a lot of energy and confidence. We'll try and play better cricket next game, credit goes to us. We play Australia. We'll try not to make mistakes and have a plan for next game."

This is probably an unpopular opinion but if you do not play any 50-over cricket other than internationally, you probably won't be very good at it.

Look at Joe Root, who played the perfect 50-over innings. But the bowlers, they are not used to bowling 10 overs if you are basing your team on T20 form and experience.

It comes down to concentration, too. Someone like Phil Salt has got some good starts this winter and if you do that in T20, you have done your job. But if that keeps happening in ODIs, losing early wickets puts the rest of the batting order under so much pressure.

It is a very, very different game to T20 cricket and you have to go about it differently - I don't think many of England's players recognise that.

"Don't care about losing 3-0 as long as we win the Champions Trophy" ... What will Duckett say now?

    Jeff

England continuing to struggle in all forms of cricket (both men and women). Maybe it’s not the coach or the captain? Maybe it’s the ECB and its lack of attention to the needs and structure of the domestic game. Look after that and the international teams will look after themselves.

  10. 'We should consider all possibilities' - Buttler on captaincypublished at 17:33 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

"I don't want to say any emotional statements right now but me and the guys at the top should consider all possibilities," says Jos Buttler when asked about his future as captain.

While we shouldn't jump to conclusions, it does feel like Saturday's game against South Africa could possibly be his last as captain of England's white-ball team.

  11. Postpublished at 17:31 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

Jos Buttler adds that Afghanistan "got away from us" in the final 10 overs.

England conceded 113 runs in that time.

That is definitely an area where Brendon McCullum has some significant work to improve in the next few months.

Jos Buttler says it is "really disappointing" that England are out of the Champions Trophy.

He adds that he is "gutted".

  13. 'Salt and Smith's dismissals were appalling'published at 17:29 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

    Jonathan Agnew
    BBC Chief Cricket Commentator

A few years ago you'd have said that losing to Afghanistan would be like England slipping on a banana skin. But they are a hugely improved side and they are right up there with the best in white-ball cricket.

That's twice now they've beaten England in ICC events. It's a very well-drilled side, and they've produced a brilliant performance to bounce back from their disappointment against South Africa.

Ibrahim Zadran's innings was fantastic, a testament to what you can do even if you don't get the quickest start. It shows that you do have time and what you can do if you are prepared to get yourself in on a good, fast pitch.

In contrast, Phil Salt and Jamie Smith's dismissals were appalling from England's point of view.

When you are chasing such a big target you cannot afford to give early wickets away and that's what England did. Phil Salt offered a sort of forlorn waft at a good-length ball and Jamie Smith, I cannot understand for a nanosecond what was going through his head.

  14. Postpublished at 17:26 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

There will also be questions about England's game management at the end there.

They needed 17 runs from 14 balls with three wickets in hand.

    They lost by eight runs...

  15. Postpublished at 17:25 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

This is another mark in an extremely disappointing winter for England men's side.

They lost a three-Test series in Pakistan, before winning in New Zealand.

They lost a one-day international series against West Indies too before winning the T20 series in between those two Test series.

They were battered in ODI and T20 series in India and have now exited this tournament at the earliest possible stage.

It's been a grim winter - and that's before we think about the Women's T20 World Cup and Ashes.

It's a fabulous victory for Afghanistan.

That's it as far as England are concerned. They weren't quite good enough on the day.

Jos Buttler won the 2022 T20 World Cup in his first ICC tournament in charge.

The next three have been poor - very poor in fact.

They finished seventh at the 2023 50-over World Cup, with just three wins in nine games. A semi-final exit followed at the T20 World Cup in 2024 but they lost two games in the group stage there.

They are now out in the group stages here at the Champions Trophy.

It makes for pretty grim reading for Buttler and England fans.

  18. Postpublished at 17:18 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

Speaking on Tuesday, Jos Buttler admitted that his future as England's white-ball captain was on the line in this game.

England have lost and are now heading out.

Does that make Buttler's position as captain untenable? Will Saturday's game against South Africa be his last in charge?

Azmatullah Omarzai finishes with 5-58. Superb.
