New Zealand captain Sophie Devine: "It is bittersweet. I would throw it all away to make sure this team won.

"I am so proud of the fight this team showed. We kept going and backing our strengths. I am incredibly proud. The result did not go our way but that doesn't matter."

On her century: "I am really proud against the best bowling side in the world. It is a hard one because you want to be on the winning team. I am sure I will reflect at some point.

"We stayed in the fight and that shows the fight of this team. We knew what they could do and Melie Kerr and Lea Tahuhu were fantastic. Our players can adapt which makes this team really good.

"Bree Illing has been amazing coming in to take big wickets. She is tall and she has pace and it helps being a left-armer. She has amazing confidence which is great as a captain."

On South Africa: "There are plenty of runs on offer so it's just about who can hold their nerve."

  4. 'It was tighter than I would have liked!'published at 17:45 BST 1 October

Australia captain Alyssa Healy: "It felt tighter at times than I would have liked!

"When Sophie [Devine] is there you never know. Full credit to our girls for hanging in there.

"We made over 300 and we were struggling through the middle there. As a batting group we will reflect on our dismissals and see where we can be more precise and secure those 300 plus totals."

On Ash Gardner: "She is continuing to mature as a cricketer and that is really impressive. She has a great day and hopefully she can enjoy this moment."

On Kim Garth: "She is really handy and was so important for us in the powerplay.

"There are little things we need to get right but we need to take this momentum to our next game."

Here is the winning moment which sealed Australia's 89-run victory over New Zealand.

  6. Postpublished at 17:38 BST 1 October

A moment of appreciation for Sophie Devine for her 111 off 112, including 12 fours and three sixes.

With her ninth ODI century, she's moved ahead of Debbie Hockley as New Zealand's third-highest women's ODI run-scorer.

  7. 'We are able to bat all the way down'published at 17:36 BST 1 October

Player of the match and Australia all-rounder Ash Gardner: "It was really special. When I got out in to the middle I had some pretty clear plans and stuck to my strengths. We always knew we needed a big total here and the wicket was good.

"I tried to capitalise and we knew we had a really good total on the board with 327. Soph Devine batted so well so that was really important and will be in this tournament.

"I am trying to keep my game as simple as possible. I run my runs hard to get into my innings and try to cash in with boundaries. Partnerships are crucial too.

"We bat all the way down so we have that freedom and confidence. We have players coming in who can change the game. I love those pressure situations and it's great when the success comes with it."

  8. Postpublished at 17:33 BST 1 October

Australia all-rounder Ash Gardner has unsurprisingly been named player of the match.

She top-scored for Australia with 115 (83), including 16 fours and one six.

Australia are such a strong side - they are the ones to beat. It has been a professional performance from them again despite a wobble in the middle.

Not all is lost for New Zealand and there is still a long way to go in this tournament.

    Breaking

The defending champions are off the mark.

Australia didn't have it all their own way. With the bat, they collapsed from 108-2 to 128-5 before Ash Gardner bailed them out with a superb century (115 off 83).

They then had New Zealand 0-2 before Sophie Devine gave them a brief scare with a century of her own (111 off 112).

But this is Australia and thanks to their almost unmatched batting and bowling depth, they've cruised to victory.

    Yup, she's gone.

New Zealand's final four wickets fall for just two runs.

  13. New Zealand reviewpublished at 43.2 overs

Sophie Molineux thinks she's wrapped this up, having Bree Illing caught behind.

Umpire Sue Redfern agrees but New Zealand review it.

Oooooh. Somehow Bree Illing survives. She plays and misses and the ball whistles past her off stump. She defends the final delivery of the over.

A triple wicket-maiden for Annabel Sutherland but no hat-trick.

It feels very odd that we were talking about how Sophie Devine can make this uncomfortable just an over ago.

    How this game has changed.

It's as out as out can be. Eden Carson departs for a duck.

Annabel Sutherland has three wickets in four balls and is on a hat-trick.

  18. New Zealand reviewpublished at 42.4 overs

Stop taking wickets. I can't keep up.

Eden Carson is given out lbw but sends it upstairs, more out of desperation than anything I think.

Jess Kerr did not really try and play anything spectacular there.

Another brilliant delivery, so skilful. The length was the key and Kerr was in no position to play it.

Now this is wrapping up quickly and that is what Australia want.
