Magnificent to watch. Timing and placement - Melie Kerr had everything in that shot. She is settling in nicely.

  2. NZ 36-2published at 10 overs

    Kerr 24, Devine 11

A first change for Australia as right-arm seamer Darcie Brown replaces Sophie Molineux for the final six balls of the powerplay.

It's the best over of the innings for New Zealand, with three Melie Kerr fours coming from it.

She smashes the ball past backward point then breaches the ropes at mid-wicket and cover point from consecutive deliveries.

Those three shots take them to 36-2 at the close of the powerplay - Australia were 81-1 at this stage, but did lose Phoebe Litchfield from the first ball of the 11th over.

Sophie Devine does not look comfortable but she will settle down soon enough. You know what you are doing when you have played in five World Cups.

  4. NZ 24-2published at 9 overs

A whole three runs from Kim Garth's fifth over.

That might be the last we see of her for now as we exit the powerplay - that'll be a relief for New Zealand.

And it's not like Australia have a battery of world-class spinners, eh?

You have to be realistic in situations like this. New Zealand need to keep rotating the strike and just keep batting.

In a tournament like this you have to start well, so it is disappointing for them.

  6. NZ 21-2published at 8 overs

A first boundary for Melie Kerr, dropping back in her crease and whipping Sophie Molineux through mid-wicket for four.

The 24-year-old averages 42.49 from 77 ODIs, with a high score of 232* - the highest ever score in this format.

New Zealand know that this game is gone. It's just about batting out for as long as you can now.

  8. NZ 16-2published at 7 overs

Kim Garth continues to be extremely miserly.

Her four overs have gone for just eight runs, with two singles coming off this one.

Women's cricket has definitely arrived and no longer needs justification. However, the England team does need it's own nickname. We've got the Lionesses, we've got the Red Roses. So what is it to be for cricket?

  10. NZ 14-2published at 6 overs

A couple of singles from Sophie Molineux's third over.

New Zealand's required run-rate is already up to 7.11 runs an over - they're going along at 2.33 presently.

Losing two early wickets puts you back so much in a game like this. It is all about re-building from now on.

You have to give Australia credit for not allowing New Zealand to play the shots they want to.

  12. NZ 10-2published at 5 overs

Edged, but well short of slip!

Kim Garth draws an edge from Melie Kerr with a lovely delivery, but the ball falls in front of the fielder.

On an Australian wicket that may have been out.

A first four for New Zealand, as Sophie Devine lashes Sophie Molineux past point.

The New Zealand captain, playing in her final World Cup, will likely need to contribute a fair few more boundaries if her side are going to get anywhere near Australia's total.

Australia have been sensible and have not tried too many things. They have kept things simple and bowled the right lengths and areas.

Melie Kerr knows that she is so crucial in this chase.

Amelia Kerr faces three dot balls from Kim Garth then gets New Zealand going from the 16th ball of the innings.

She knocks into a single into the covers, before Sophie Devine adds two to backward point and another off side run to retain the strike.

New Zealand need something extraordianry from these players. This was already a difficult target but in this position now, there is a lot to think about.

There are a lot of worried faces in the New Zealand dugout as there should be.

  17. NZ 0-2published at 2 overs

    Another big appeal!

Sophie Molineux strikes the pads of Sophie Devine immediately, but there's a bit of an inside edge and the New Zealand captain is safe for now.

Three dot balls follow the wicket to end the over - New Zealand are still yet to score.

Nice delivery but there was such a massive gap between bat and pad. Very few teams in the world can come back from this. Good captaincy going to the spinner.

Molineux slides through the defences of Bates, not that there was much defence. She charged straight through that gap.

That's a hammer blow to New Zealand's fairly slim chances.

  20. wicket

    Bates b Molineux 0 (NZ 0-2)

But Suzie Bates doesn't survive for long!

She's bowled by Sophie Molineux, inside edging onto her stumps while attempting a drive.

A disastrous start for the T20 world champions - they've lost two wickets for no runs and neither batter at the crease has faced a ball.
