Great reward for Blessing Muzarabani who has been Zimbabwe’s best seamer today and the only one to take a wicket. He’s been their fastest bowler through the air (top speed 87mph) and has found more movement off the pitch (0.7°) than any other Zimbabwe seamer.

Blessing Muzarabani has got a wicket and he deserves one. He is the Zimbabwe bowler with the greatest potential.

He remains the leading wicket-taker in the world in 2025.

  3. Eng 483-3published at 84 overs

    Pope 162, Brook 2

As we've said, there's no Richard Ngarava to bowl here after his back issues.

Victor Nyauchi is sharing the new ball but has had a tough day, conceding 103 runs from 18 overs.

So... how long before people start saying Joe Root should be dropped for only scoring 30 against 'sub-standard' opposition? After all, if this match is no warm-up for India, that's a shocking failure from the lad...

    Chris, feeling sarcastic, in Coventry

Presumably Root makes way for Bethell then?

England have resisted the temptation to send in a nighthawk. Harry Brook emerges with 20 minutes to go in the day.

    Joe Root has top-edged that.

The headline writers have finally got their man: 'Root fails at Trent Bridge today!'

A new ball and it comes a bit quicker off the pitch. A straightforward catch.

    Root c Williams b Muzarabani 34 (Eng 479-3)

The run of centurions is over. Joe Root is not going to get there.

He has top edged Blessing Muzarabani down to fine leg and has to stomp off.

Ollie Pope has been as fluent as Ben Duckett.

Zak Crawley went a bit slow, but he just needed to get some runs. It has been the plainest sailing I can remember in a Test match for some time.

  9. Eng 476-2published at 82 overs

    Pope 159, Root 33

Harry Brook has his pads on and Ben Duckett is in shorts. I think that ends any discussion of a declaration tonight.

I could drool! I think Joe Root was drooling. How did Ollie Pope get so far underneath it when it was down leg side?

  11. 6 runs

    Eng 475-2published at 81.1 overs

Flicked for six! Ollie Pope did well to reach it the ball was so far down the leg side.

  13. 150 runs

150 for Ollie Popepublished at 81 overs

And now Ollie Pope passes 150 and the crowd rises.

It's his fourth score of 150 or more for England. England have a big decision to make.

You can only play whoever is put in front of you, but surely a hundred against Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazelwood is tougher to get. There must be some kind of appreciation for that.

  15. Eng 466-2published at 80.5 overs

    Oh that's brilliant.

Ollie Pope drives for four and then bends his knees and arches his back to lift the ball over the slips.

Joe Root cuts the first delivery with this hard new ball for four. If you needed confirmation, there it is.

Zimbabwe have taken the new ball. Will England be cautious or attack it? I think we know the answer...

Is Ollie Pope's place really under threat?

You have got to perform at this level and be consistent. That's the key with Pope, that lack of consistency.

  19. Eng 453-2published at 80 overs

    Pope 137, Root 28

Three more boundaries to Ollie Pope come in the rest of the over, bringing that 506 England made on day one into Pakistan into view.

The first is a glorious straight drive from England's number three. The third a dismissive swipe.

"Is his place really under threat?" asks Aggers on TMS.

  20. Eng 441-2published at 79.1 overs

Applause has gone around Trent Bridge but Joe Root doesn't seem to know why. It's his 13,000 Test run. He's only the fifth man to get there.
