I think Ben Stokes should bat at three. I think Pope would be better at five or six. I don't think he has the technique to survive against that quality at the top. I think Bethell is a real talent and his ceiling is high, but coming in at three is a risk.

    Pope 93, Root 13

Ollie Pope is one of those batters whose place always seems to be questioned. He got three centuries last year but also a series of low scores while Jacob Bethell did so well when he came in for the New Zealand series at number three.England have a big call to make and it has been made even harder by Pope's knock today.

The attack's not great but what Ollie Pope's doing, to play under this pressure after what's been said about Jacob Bethell, to get a number. He's found a rhythm and he's found a mindset. It's really good from Ollie Pope.

Against this attack, if you fail, it will stand out because there'll be scores all around you.

    Pope 93, Root 13

That was a pretty ropey over from part-time spinner Wesley Madhevere. One is a mile outside off stump, another way down leg.

Ollie Pope's hundred has looked inevitable from the start.

I think Zimbabwe thought the ball was going to do a lot more than it has and they didn't get the ball in the right place often enough in the morning session. It's been a lovely day for batting.

Here's the wicket of Zak Crawley - a rare moment for Zimbabwe to celebrate today.

I'm backing Ben Duckett as leading run-scorer. The wicket-taker race is a tough one to call.

England have injuries and will mix their pacers around. Gus Atkinson? It'll be tough for him to match last year.

Richard Ngarava has made his way back onto the field, having been carried off on a tractor earlier with back spasms. I wouldn't say he looked particularly nimble even with all of the work the physio has done.

England are in a very nice position. As skipper, I'd want to bat the day out. They will be 480+ if they do that. I'd be looking to get to 550, 600 and then pull out. I'm going to bat once and win the game by bowling them out twice.

The familiar Roooooot cry greets the arrival of England's former captain and is repeated when he gets his first run with a dab into the off side.

There's one of the more optimistic appeals for lbw at the end of the over as one sneaks onto Ollie Pope's pad.

It looked straight and Sikandar Raza hasn't turned too many.

Zak Crawley will have been under pressure there. He hasn't had a great start to the season. That's a nerve-settler.

Three reds. It would have hit a decent chunk of leg stump.

Zak Crawley has to walk off but he does so to loud applause. That should settle him down for the start of the summer.

    Zimbabwe have their second wicket.

Zimbabwe's players look confident. Crawley has not hit it...

  15. England reviewpublished at 16:52 British Summer Time

We have a wicket, or do we?!

Zak Crawley is given out lbw to Sikandar Raza.

The only thing that can save Crawley is if it's sneaking down to miss leg stump.

  16. Eng 368-1published at 65 overs

Ben Stokes is prowling with his arms behind his back like one of those exam invigilators. I think he's getting restless.

    Don't rule out a declaration.

  17. Eng 363-1published at 64 overs

    Crawley 123, Pope 81

Zak Crawley continues after that treatment and looks a little annoyed to have not picked a gap with a flashing shot on the back foot.

Ben Stokes is in his training kit. A declaration would still be an hour away at least if it is to come.

  18. Eng 361-1published at 63.2 overs

Zak Crawley has called for the physio now. He doesn't look too bad but it's that right hip that got hit in the previous over that is causing the trouble.

It is a tough day for Zimbabwe. There will be a few sore bodies tomorrow morning.

I think England will power on through and look to get 600.

Zimbabwe don't look to have got into any rhythm.

When it is flat and tough, you have got to bowl disciplined. That's what Zimbabwe have not done.

  20. Eng 359-1published at 63 overs

Another four, a no-ball and one chipped slightly aerially by Zak Crawley. He's limping at the end of the over having inside edged one onto the bony bit of his hip.

Bowler Tanaka Chivanga isn't looking too clever either. Zimbabwe can't afford to lose another to injury.
