England are motoring along after tea, attacking with intent and superb execution. Their false shot percentage post tea is just 4%, way down from 18% in the morning and 14 in the afternoon sessions.

  4. Eng 346-1published at 61 overs

    Crawley 113, Pope 75

As Mike says, Gilbert Jessop can rest easily for a while longer because Ollie Pope has now faced 77 balls - one more than Jessop took to reach his hundred in that famous knock.

Zak Crawley, who has moved at a relatively sedate pace today, drills another straight four and bowler Tanaka Chivanga responds by banging one in halfway down with an extra bit of angry oomph.

The line isn't great and that's four byes too.

Gilbert will be happy Pope has slowed down, though he may have one eye on a certain Harry Brook...

The tricky thing for Ben Stokes will be the balance between wanting to win this game - and do so quickly - and getting some time in the middle.

Stokes himself hasn't played since December, remember. He need a hit and that might persuade him not to declare.

There is no tension in the England setup, but now the pressure is on the Zimbabwe batters to make a game of it.

The only question mark - what's Ben Stokes going to do?

  8. Eng 332-1published at 59 overs

Pope and Crawley shake hands after bringing up the hundred partnership I teased. There just does not look like a way Zimbabwe can trouble them on a flat pitch and with the sun now out.

Only one wicket has fallen today...

    Andy Zaltzman

There have been 16 instances in Test history of one, two and three all scoring a hundred runs in the first innings.

England have done it three times. The most recent was at Rawalpindi against Pakistan in 2022.

Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope all made hundred runs.

  10. Eng 328-1published at 58 overs

    Crawley 104, Pope 71

Ollie Pope has scored 71 runs of the 97 in this partnership. He has been very aggressive.

Zak Crawley looks like the weight has been lifted from his shoulders as he leans on his bat with an arm on his hip at the non-striker's end.

He had such a tough run in the winter - scores of 0, one, 17, eight, 21 and five against New Zealand - when he came up against an excellently-named Black Caps bowler.

By Zak Crawley's standards he has grafted for that hundred. He has been quite watchful.

A fifth Test hundred for Zak Crawley.

It's an understated celebration. These won't be the hardest runs he has to make but it's a confidence booster after a difficult run.

  15. Eng 313-1published at 56 overs

    Crawley 99, Pope 61

Ollie Pope does his job in leaving Zak Crawley on strike for the next over on 99.

When the cover drive works, it is a beautiful thing and it has worked pretty well today.

  17. Eng 311-1published at 55 overs

    Crawley 98, Pope 61

Zak Crawley has driven so well today and another such shot brings him a 12th boundary and takes him to 98.

Remember he hasn't scored a ton for England since July 2023.

Without wishing to be a jinx, I’m curious as to whether any side has had its top three all on 100+ at the end of day one before?

    Andy, Colchester

These three did it for England in 2022...

  19. Eng 306-1published at 54.2 overs

This is very gentle bowling from Victor Nyauchi and Ollie Pope is taking full advantage.

A four on the cut is followed by another on the pull.

    Gilbert? Are you there?

  20. Eng 298-1published at 16:05 British Summer Time

    Crawley 94, Pope 51

We've mentioned it a bit but should England look to declare today?

Remember this is a four-day Test and there's rain in the forecast for Saturday.

We're on landmark watch before then. Zak Crawley is a hit away from a ton.
