It was a complete innings of playing everything how he saw it. He watched the ball and played everything at its merit. He was absolutely determined to make runs.

They'd have been scarred at times from Headingley, when they gave away the good positions and when you're captain you want to lead by example.

  3. Ind 574-8published at 144 overs

Mohammed Siraj is the new batter. India will keep batting.

Shubman Gill's 269 was the highest score by an Indian batter in England, by the way.

Shubman Gill is finally dismissed and, in the end, it's quite a tame dismissal.

If he's tired it's hardly surprising. It was a fabulous innings and it's one of very few false shots.

  6. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 143.3 overs

    Gill c Pope b Tongue 269 (Ind 574-8)

A brilliant innings by India's captain comes to an end. He's congratulated by England's players and then given a standing ovation by the Edgbaston crowd.

In truth it's a relatively soft dismissal.

It's a short ball from Josh Tongue and Gill attempts to hook it from across the line, but is unable to get the meat of the bat behind it and instead plops it into the hands of Ollie Pope at square leg.

I could understand Ben Stokes' decision to lead from the front and bowl first at Headingley. Now that England are 1-0 up, choosing to bowl again just seems reckless (and presumptuous), assuming that England will always get 20 wickets. and chase down totals You have the lead - why not preserve it, and your energy?

  8. Ind 574-7published at 143 overs

The tall angular frame of Shoaib Bashir goes through his delivery stride and spins one past the outside edge of Akash Deep's defensive prod. A couple of balls later and Deep ends the over with another flick of his legs for a couple.

Shubman Gill has moved on to 269 - his highest first-class score.

Jack: As nice a ball as that was from Root, I’m not massively enthusiastic about seeing him get that much turn when India have already got 570 plus on the board…

  10. Ind 569-7published at 142 overs

Shubman Gill guides the ball to deep point to pick up a single off the first ball from Josh Tongue after tea bringing Akash Deep on strike.

Deep punches the ball back into the stumps at the non-striker's end but Tongue is unable to get any skin on it. It looked like Gill had got his bat behind the line regardless.

Final ball of the over and Deep swivels on his heels and glances it square for four to get off the mark.

Right, Shubman Gill is striding out to the middle, followed by England's players.

He is smiling and looks as fresh as a daisy.

Opportunities to make triple hundreds do not come along too often. He needs 35 runs to get there.

I’ve got tickets to day three at Lord's. Will Shubman Gill still be batting then?!

    Tom

The front foot drive of Gill is a sight to behold. It's annoying that he is taking the game away from England but credit where it is due, a class act with the bat so far in this series.

    James

Everyone complaining about England's performance and it's not been great, but like the previous game, you can't judge it on one innings. With Jasprit Bumrah not playing, England are likely to score freely on this pitch. A draw is most likely followed by an England win.

Shubman Gill needs to beat Graeme Smith's 277 to record the highest score by an overseas player on this ground in Test matches.

Alastair Cook's 294 against India in 2011 is the record by any player in Tests.

It's all been about India captain Shubman Gill, though, today. He's leading from the front with the bat.

Suspect the only way he gets out here is by taking on the bowling and looking to score quickly while batting with India's tail.

    Thanks, Elizabeth.

Toil, grind and attrition for England in that session.

It's now the 10th highest total by any side in Test matches at Edgbaston.

Incidentally, India's highest Test total in England was the 664 they made at The Oval in 2007.

Shubman Gill has shown no signs of deteriorating even though he's been in so long. He's still looking good and running hard.

A phenomenal innings so far from Gill.

  19. Tea - Ind 564-7published at 141 overs

    Gill 265, Deep 0

Shubman Gill drives through the covers for four, plays three dot balls, and then runs a bye to retain the strike after tea.

India are 564-7, with Gill on 265 (380) and Akash Deep on 0 (3). The India captain has 300 - and a team 600 - in his sights.
