  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 2.5 overs

    Pope c Rahul b Deep 0 (Eng 13-2)

Uh oh... Two in two for Akash Deep as Ollie Pope also goes for a duck.

Pope attempts to work a delivery just back of a length through mid-wicket but ends up sending the ball flying to the slip cordon.

KL Rahul juggles but clings on.

Brilliant catch. Fabulous work. And would you believe it? It's the captain Shubman Gill.

It went so quickly. In real time, that flew off the outside edge.

    India have the breakthrough.

It's a great start from Akash Deep and a brilliant catch by Shubman Gill. The ball was traveling, it was going to his left, and he judged it really well.

  4. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 2.4 overs

    Duckett c Gill b Deep 0 (Eng 13-1)

The Hollies stand had just started to break out into a rendition of Sweet Caroline, but are stunned into silence after Ben Duckett departs for a duck.

After a poor over Akash Deep angles one across Duckett who sends a thick edge into the hands of the diving Shubman Gill.

Not the start England would have wanted.

If Alex Hartley dropping Oasis song titles into her TMS commentary stints wasn't enough for you, the Hollies is going through a rendition of Don't Look Back in Anger.

At this run rate if we bat for 151 overs we'll be on 1,812 runs by day four...

You never know what's enough with this England team, and with the way they've started you never know. But 587 is a decent total.

  8. Eng 13-0published at 2 overs

After a poor start by Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj is pretty much on the money with his line and length.

    Zak Crawley much more watchful.

Trouser update - Ravindra Jadeja now has a new pair on.

How early before Gilbert Jessop starts getting nervous?

  10. Eng 13-0published at 1.1 overs

Mohammed Siraj took off wide-brimmed sun hat and looked pumped at the top of his mark before promptly starting with a no-ball. Without Jasprit Bumrah he is probably the Alpha leader of this India attack.

Meanwhile, the elastic in Ravindra Jadeja's trousers appears to have given way as he stops the ball with a dive at point off Siraj's first legal delivery.

    Thanks, Kev.

Alan Rees of the MCC Library has been in touch with me to say South Africa's Lizaad Buyron Williams is the man we are looking for with the LBW. He's played two Tests, two ODIs and nine T20s to date.

There's no hanging back from this England side. It's coming off the bat nicely.

It should be a nice couple of days to bat on it.

  14. Eng 12-0published at 1 overs

Akash Deep goes a fraction full to Zak Crawley with the penultimate ball of the over, and the England opener unfurls a picture picture straight drive. Four more to the England.

Beautiful drive up the ground and it was four runs as soon as it left the bat of Zak Crawley.

    Very solid start.

  16. Eng 4-0published at 0.2 overs

Zak Crawley keeps out his first ball and then punches Akash Deep down the ground for four with a lovely drive. England are up and running.

Akash Deep will bowl the first over for India and is at the top of his mark. Three slips and a gully in place.

Zak Crawley has just taken guard.

    Here we go.

It's really interesting because the one thing we know is Ben Stokes doesn't bat for draws.

In that sense it makes it an entertaining test. Normally, a team could bat for time with no real pressure but they'll get on with things.

If India can squeeze two wickets tonight that changes the whole tone. But if England can survive, it could be quite fun

The pitch is getting a roll while India's players are stretching and warming up on the edge of the outfield.

Bit more than a tricky period for England to negotiate here. After just over five sessions in the field how tired are Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley?

India batted sensibly bar the comical dismissal of Mohammed Siraj at the end.

Now the question is what this track, which you wouldn't want to bowl on, can do.
