As if he hasn't done enough in this Test match, Joe Root took the catch for the first wicket and now he has the ball in hand.

It's all well and good bowling spin for a bit, but these Dukes balls this year give you 40 overs of help and then 40 overs where it does little. If it is not doing enough, I'd be tempted to bring the pace bowlers back and therefore come off.

  4. SL 26-1published at 10 overs

It looks like England have been told to stick to the spinners for now.

Shoaib Bashir twirls through his first over with just two from it, and Joe Root is also warming up.

The Sri Lanka batters will be in the ears of the umpires.

  6. SL 24-1published at 9 overs

Every over survived without a wicket falling feels like a success for Sri Lanka at the moment. It's gloomy, and here comes the light meter...

It's always nice when Test cricketers make us feel a little better about the mistakes that we see every single week in our club games.

I don't think we've got too long left.

  9. SL 21-1published at 8 overs

    Target 483

Dimuth Karunaratne, one of Sri Lanka's most experienced players, has got to take responsibility and steer his side through this tricky passage of play.

And, on cue, he nearly runs out Pathum Nissanka.

That was a very comfortable catch and a challenging innings for Madushka. He poked at a ball he should have left but it is hard to leave at the Pavilion End.

    That felt inevitable.

The umpires were just discussing the light, but chose to play on, and that won't please Nishan Madushka.

Gus Atkinson is rewarded for England's disciplined opening spell with Madushka edging a good length ball straight to Joe Root at first slip.

Sri Lanka's opening partnership continues to struggle.

It's not easy for the Sri Lanka batsmen. They probably think, why does it cloud over when we come to bat? But they had their chance at the toss and chose not to. Maybe the cricketing gods are punishing them for it.

  13. SL 19-0published at 7 overs

    Target 483

I don't think Sri Lanka would be too opposed to a bad light call at this stage.

Another edge from Dimuth Karunaratne falls just short of Joe Root at first slip.

I don't think we'll be out there much longer, but they might give England the option of bowling a spinner. The ball is only six overs' old though and they won't want to lose the shine off it.

  16. SL 17-0published at 6 overs

    Target 483

    Yep, it's not easy.

Nishan Madushka almost chops on as he is hurried for pace by Gus Atkinson, before a big lbw appeal that is turned down and England opt against the review.

Rightly so - it nipped sharply and was missing leg stump by some distance.

Karunaratne is not using his feet, he looks trapped on his feet and is always jabbing down on it.

  18. SL 15-0published at 5 overs

    Target 483

Lovely from Chris Woakes, causing plenty of problems with his unwavering peppering of the off stump.

Sri Lanka's openers are under immense pressure both from the quality of the bowling, and their monumental target.

Joe Root is the reason I started watching cricket back in 2013 after seeing him score his first Lord's 100 against Australia. As a 19-year-old, I’ve looked up to him throughout my childhood not only as a great cricketer, but also a great role model of true dedication and impeccable attitude. A certified legend indeed.
