    Oh, Matthew Potts!

Village cricket creeps into the Test arena as Potts slides to retrieve the ball with quite a straightforward bit of fielding, but he somehow ends up throwing it over the boundary rope while he's on the move.

The spectators in front of him find it highly amusing, at least.

This is where Sri Lanka need their senior players like Karunaratne and Chandimal to turn up, show some fight and get a score.

  3. SL 9-0published at 3 overs

    Edged, but short of slip.

Dimuth Karunaratne does well to play the ball late, ensuring it stays low.

This has been a testing opening spell so far for the visiting openers.

The way he played it, it was as though it had scuttled through and he'd jabbed the bat down on it.

  5. Not outpublished at 2.2 overs

    A poor decision, actually.

Paul Reiffel gives himself a disappointed head shake as the replay is shown on the big screen, with the impact way outside off stump.

    He's not hit it!

  7. SL reviewpublished at 2.2 overs

    Given!

Chris Woakes traps Dimuth Karunaratne on the pad, and umpire Paul Reiffel agrees.

Could be a bit high, but umpire's call would be in England's favour. Karunaratne sends it upstairs.

Sri Lanka will be hoping to go in tonight just one down.

  9. SL 9-0published at 2 overs

    Target 483

    Beautiful timing.

Nishan Madushka strikes Sri Lanka's first boundary, clipping Gus Atkinson past mid-on.

Trying to condense Joe Root's best shots into one short highlights reel must be quite hard work.

It's a brooding sky with low level flat cloud. It's not broken all day and it's been quite chilly.

  12. SL 3-0published at 1 over

    Target 483

    Steady start for both sides.

6-3, 2-1 and 35-3 have been the offerings from Sri Lanka's top order so far in the series.

Some fight shown here would be greatly appreciated.

If England do get a few wickets, this Saturday afternoon crowd may get boisterous.

  14. SL 1-0published at 0.2 overs

Nishan Madushka solidly defends his first ball from Chris Woakes, before taking a single to get himself and Sri Lanka going.

  15. Postpublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 31 August

Right, over to you, Sri Lanka.

Just a record fourth-innings chase stands between them and levelling the series.

    No pressure, then.

Joe Root. Such a classy batsman, and a fantastic ambassador for the game. It’s an absolute privilege to have watched him over the last 12 years. A case of absolutely knowing what you’ve got before it’s gone. A legend.

    Joe Root, eh?

So dramatic that I need a bit of a lie down.

Sir Alastair Cook broke the record Joe Root now holds in 2012, on England's tour of India. In the next Test, a young Root made his debut in Nagpur. Symmetry.
