Ollie Pope has had three low scores, he's not been at his best. England are well on top but Test match runs are never easy to come by. It is cloudy, there is a breeze so it is probably a better day for bowling today.

Rangana Herath, legendary Sri Lanka spinner, is ringing the five-minute bell this morning.

He gets a decent round of applause from the admiring Lord's crowd, and the Sri Lanka team start their huddle. They're hoping for a miracle.

Dan Lawrence was the only England wicket to fall last night and he was pretty miffed with the decision after Sri Lanka's review. The makeshift opener has had a difficult time in the series with scores of nine and seven in this Test.

Ben Duckett is 15 not out and Ollie Pope has two.

England's stand-in skipper could also do with a score and today presents a great, pressure-free opportunity for him.

Touring the Lord's museum, I felt a tinge of sadness seeing the autographed jacket and bat of Graham Thorpe, one of my heroes growing up. That Tetley Bitter jacket evokes so many memories for fans of cricket in the early 1990s.

Yesterday was a stunning day at the Home of Cricket and while today looks like it's going to be a bit more cloudy, we should still be in for another full day's play.

It felt slightly surreal seeing Ian Bell putting the Sri Lanka batters through their paces this morning. Will he be in the England dugout one day?

  8. Atkinson 'not surprised' by first Test centurypublished at 10:38 British Summer Time 31 August

    Stephan Shemilt
BBC Sport chief cricket writer at Lord's

Gus Atkinson said he was not surprised by his maiden century in the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord’s.

Atkinson, 26, stroked a sublime 118 to become the first England number eight to make a Test ton in 11 years.

It was also the Surrey pace bowler’s maiden first-class hundred, beating his previous best score of 91, and his first century in any sort of cricket since 108 not out in a second XI game against Worcestershire in 2018.

“I’ve been frustrated with my batting this year,” said Atkinson. “I know how good a player I can be and I feel like I’ve got so much natural ability with the bat.

“I felt like I was moving really well and hitting the ball really cleanly. It was one of those days where it comes off.”

Atkinson helped England to 427 all out in their first innings, then chipped in with two wickets as Sri Lanka were rolled over for 196.

    Good morning!

Welcome to day three - England have a healthy lead of 256 and nine wickets remaining, which suggests we could be in for plenty of fun this morning.

It'll then be up to Sri Lanka to show much more fight with the bat if they are to avoid a three-day defeat. Stay tuned as we build up to the first ball in half an hour's time.
