KL Rahul greets a Ben Stokes with a beautiful classical drive through the covers.

He drops to a knee as he does so - hold that pose!

It's been a bit of a strange day so far. England look like they have moved the ball when it's swung but it's been full and India have been able to score.

There has been shape but England have either slightly over-pitched or it's been wide.

For a Test match side, England are bowling a lot of full tosses which is poor at this level. We're lucky India aren't punishing them more or they could be building a huge total already!

Change of ends for Brydon Carse as he returns to replace Josh Tongue.

His first two deliveries are full tosses and Jaiswal dispatches the second on those for four through point.

Given India look like batting to Sat afternoon I am looking forward to Crawley, Duckett and Pope hitting Bumrah to all parts of the ground in overcast humid seamer friendly swinging conditions late on Saturday/Sunday.....

When you play aggressively, you need to recognise that when the bowlers are bowling well, you have to respect it and not give away your wicket.

It looks like Rahul is not in control at the moment with some of his shots.

Rahul hits Stokes for consecutive fours towards third man boundary

    Back-to-back fours for KL Rahul!

Ben Stokes' parsimonious start comes to an end as the India opener sends the first two balls of the over to the boundary.

The England captain is perhaps a touch unfortunate, with a wild slash sending the ball over the cordon and then an edge past gully taking his delivery to the ropes.

Although I understand everyone doubting our choice to bowl first, can you imagine having spent the last 60 mins watching Bumrah move the ball around like this? We’d be five down and wondering why we didn’t bowl.

England have confirmed that Jacob Bethell and Sam Cook will leave the squad on Saturday evening to play in the County Championship for Warwickshire and Essex respectively, with the latest round of fixtures beginning on Sunday.

Surrey's Jamie Overton is likely to stay with the group.

  10. How's stat?!published at 12:30 British Summer Time

India's batters have counter-attacked fuller deliveries this morning, scoring 43 off 42 against deliveries fuller than 6.25 metres compared to just eight off 39 facing good-length deliveries.

Perfect case of risk-reward not paying off for England's bowlers as they look to go fuller to bring the stumps into play.

It will give good confidence to this young side if India can bat and get over 300.

There is a lot of pressure on the young team but the idea is for everyone to stay calm and composed. Of course there will be challenges as the series progresses.

  12. Ind 58-0published at 19 overs

Fearsome pace from Josh Tongue here, tickling the 90mph mark, but occasional patchy execution.

He over-steps for a no-ball, but then sends a vicious bouncer past the face of a ducking Jaiswal.

The bowlers haven't been able to bowl that consistent length of six to eight metres. This is a much better length from Stokes so it looks like he is getting into his rhythm now.

A good over so far, he is building into something. It is good Test cricket at the moment.

Bowling first isn't because of the conditions, it's because of the stats and history. Bowling first at Headingley is a winning combo, usually.

Another solid over from Ben Stokes, just the one run from it after an over-step.

KL Rahul faces the entire over and is happy to wait for the bad ball.

India are an incredible team. It’s only the first hour. We have five days of cricket. There’s no rush.

At the moment Jaiswal is just trying to hit the ball too hard. His leg is moving away from the ball as he swings and he is not in a great position to get that cut shot.

  18. Ind 54-0published at 17 overs

A couple of singles to start Tongue's fourth over, before Jaiswal fails to ramp the England seamer.

Having scored 23 from his first 37 deliveries, Jaiswal has added six more from his next 13.

The worry is that this very average bowling attack will force Stokes into bowling more than he should.

A perfect start from Ben Stokes. A beautiful seam, perfect length as it went down.
