Is Ben Stokes the answer to Jonathan Agnew's question?

Well, no wicket in this over, but he comes close, whipping his first delivery past Rahul's off stump then tempting the India opener into a big waft at a swinging delivery.

That's a maiden from the England captain.

Very surprised that England chose to bowl first. Sun is out today but rain and cloud forecast for next few days. Slightly baffled.

    Dave, Beverley

I think England are batting first because they think it's the most positive decision, but a positive decsion can still be a bad one. Blue skies, good deck. Shades of Nasser at Brisbane

    Cameron

Can someone explain the rationale behind bowling first? Genuinely curious

    Cordelia

I know it's batting conditions today, but as a country we absolutely love a run chase and seem to bat so much better when we have a target! Bring on the chase!

These two openers have played with discipline and they have made a very good start. Where are England going to get a wicket from is the question.

  4. Ind 52-0published at 15 overs

The drinks break doesn't break KL Rahul's flow, with the India opener lashing Josh Tongue through long-off for four.

He closes the over with a similar shot but it's cut off for three - and that's India's fifty up.

This outfield is lightning quick. Rahul is a great timer of the ball. These batters compliment each other and they have played a lot of cricket together.

    It's a good partnership.

Ali from Bristol (11:09). I watched Sir Richard Hadlee take his last Test wicket (Devon Malcolm lbw 0). I sat in the Edgbaston pavilion, pathology finals revision notes in hand. No big screen replays in those days - so not much revision (and a scraped pass the next day).

    Kieran Parmley

Only 35% of deliveries have been on a good line and length so far today, the second lowest by England in the first session on day one in a home Test since 2019.

  8. drinks break

    Ind 44-0published at 14 overs

    Yes, that's very nice.

Rahul drives Woakes through the covers for four, with the ball racing away across the dry Headingley outfield.

The players will take drinks at half way through the session - India's hour, you'd have to say.

Heart goes out to Kate in Stockport. Surely the other half now needs to keep her fed and watered as she sits on the sofa watching the Test all weekend. All series?!

Runs are starting to come for India now. If they can stay calm, there are runs out there because it's a good pitch.

    There's a score out there.

  11. Ind 40-0published at 13 overs

Nicely timed from Jaiswal, firing the final ball of Tongue's over down the ground for four.

He has 27 from 44 deliveries - and here's a couple of his fours from earlier in the innings.

A shocking review. It is miles down the leg-side.

  13. Not outpublished at 12.2 overs

Yeah, not only is that impact outside leg, it's pitching outside as well.

    Not a great review, that.

  14. England reviewpublished at 12.2 overs

90mph and into the pads of Jaiswal!

Nothing from the umpire and England are going to take a look - I'm not sure about this.

Just pulled over a Toyota in Hilux for texting while driving and let him go when I figured out he was only texting TMS.

A fraction of width is all Rahul needs. It's pure technique, allowing the ball to swing gently in the air.

I have seen some quick outfields in my time, but this is rapid. You don't have to do much as a batter.

  17. Ind 36-0published at 12 overs

Immediate change of ends for Woakes as he swaps in for Brydon Carse.

His first delivery is a half volley that KL Rahul crunches through the covers for four, but those are the only runs from the over.

I don't know what's funnier - the A+ windup from Andrew or the fact that he's read Hilux as an area of Fulham, rather than the brand of Toyota!

That is glorious from Jaiswal. It's that bottom hand he brings into the drive so well, like a punch.

    A tremendous start from India.

  20. Ind 32-0published at 11 overs

First change for England as Josh Tongue takes over from Chris Woakes.

Jaiswal drives his penultimate delivery imperiously down the ground for four, moving to 23.
