Summary

  1. Ind 226-3published at 54 overs

Pant decides not to try unleashing on Shoaib Bashir straight away, seeing off a maiden.

Returning to the topic of cartwheels, I've just remembered that after our recent work game, the daughter of a colleague managing to deliver several reasonable deliveries while coming out of a cartwheel.

Look out Women's World Cup 2037, we're cartwheeling our way to victory.

That is Rishabh Pant for you. How about that for your second ball of the innings?

  3. Ind 226-3published at 53 overs

    Wallop.

New batter Rishabh Pant is straight into the action, stepping down the pitch and lashing Ben Stokes straight back down the ground for four.

The England skipper seems to find that quite amusing, and the opponents have a friendly chat at the end of the over.

Stokes got a little bit of movement, perfect length. It was from that round the wicket angle so maybe we will see that tactic more throughout this series.

That was an extraordinary 100 from Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Bails go flying and Ben Stokes has his arms aloft! England so badly needed that.

    Jaiswal b Stokes 101 (Ind 221-3)

Hold on, that motor just spluttered!

Ben Stokes approaches wide of the crease from round the wicket and sends down a ripping 87mph delivery to peg back Jaiswal's off stump.

An excellent ball ends an excellent innings from India's superb young talent.

  7. Ind 221-2published at 52 overs

It takes three balls for Gill to reach the boundary, lashing a wide delivery from Bashir to the ropes at backward point.

India waste no time to start that motor again.

  8. Ind 215-2published at 51.1 overs

    Jaiswal 100, Gill 58

And I returned to the live text with a triple backflip.

You couldn't see it, but it definitely happened.

Anyway, Shoaib Bashir gets us back under way, and Shubman Gill defends his first delivery.

While we wait for the players to re-emerge, why not watch the best shots from Yashasvi Jaiswal's unbeaten hundred?

India have added 118 in that session and they have played well. Jaiswal was applauded as he walked off, it is quite obviously India's session this afternoon.

Jaiswal defended or left 70% of deliveries in his first 30 balls at the crease.

That's dropped to 43% after facing 30 balls, while his attacking shot rate has risen to 38% from 23% in his first 30 balls.

    Thanks Sam.

He was giving me a bit of chat during the morning session about going wicketless, but we got a couple in the end, and look at how his afternoon went.

So, to borrow some words from Denesh Ramdin, "Yea Sam, talk nah"

England rescued a first session that looked to belong to India but they couldn't repeat the trick in the second.

Shubman Gill has come in and looked very good in his first innings as India captain, but Yashasvi Jaiswal is taking the headlines as it stands.

The left-hander has made it through to a brilliant century despite clearly struggling with a hand/arm issue as he approached three figures.

To take you through the remainder of the tea break and the final session, it's over to Mike Peter.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has really mastered the off side during his century today, scoring 30 off 16 with cut shots and 42 off 26 with drives, while only nine of his runs have come through the leg side.

Stokes will not be happy that it didn't carry, but even more unhappy that it has hit the redundant helmet.

  17. Tea - Ind 215-2published at 51 overs

    Jaiswal 100, Gill 58

Ben Stokes finds the edge of Yashasvi Jaiswal - a genuine edge - but the ball drops just short of the slips.

Harry Brook palms it away as he dives to his right... and to make matters worse for England, the ball rolls into the helmet stationed behind wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.

Five penalty runs for India. That just about sums up this session for the home side.

Another edge last ball but again it doesn't carry, one bounce into the hands of Brook and that's tea.

Jaiswal is the first Asian opener to make a hundred in a Test at Headingley. Previously only visiting openers from West Indies, Australia and South Africa have made hundreds here.

  20. Ind 209-2published at 50 overs

    Jaiswal 100, Gill 57

    Maiden over from Shoaib Bashir.

The young off-spinner has bowled quite nicely, albeit without providing much of a wicket threat.

Ben Stokes is back to bowl an over - I doubt it'll be more than that - before tea.
