Summary

  1. drinks break

    Ind 275-3published at 69 overs

Two superb deliveries from Woakes either side of a ball that goes for four.

He swings one away from Pant then hopes one in, with the India batter just about correct in his decision to leave the ball.

In between, Pant edges past the single slip and to the ropes.

We'll go into drinks, with play set to run until 18:30 BST.

The team is in a good position so Gill and Pant will bat as normal.

The ball isn't doing much so if they can bat smartly, they can build a good partnership. If Pant is sensible today, he can get a big one.

Definitely with James in Rutland: yes, it's not the start we hoped for, but it's not disastrous nor hopeless. We need to see how their bowlers fare, too. Still room for optimism!

Can someone remind James in Rutland that India may only have to bat once, in which case a Test is only three innings!

That went up in the air for a long time. Zak Crawley is standing with his hands on his hips, disappointed that he couldn't get there.

  5. Ind 271-3published at 68 overs

Oh, there's the big shot from Rishabh Pant.

He makes a mess of it too, dropping back and attempting to swipe Bashir's final ball over mid-wicket, he only manages to miscue and drop the ball in a gap behind the fielder out there.

He takes a single and that's the 50 partnership up from 15.3 overs.

  6. Ind 266-3published at 67 overs

    Woops.

A Woakes delivery moves late and slips past Jamie Smith for a bye, before the England seamer adds an extra in his own column by over-stepping.

A lot of people quick to criticise England here. A reminder that a Test is four innings and you can't judge a performance until both teams have had one innings!

    Kieran Parmley

Rishabh Pant has attacked just 14% of balls faced so far today, his second lowest rate at this stage of a Test innings and well below his usual rate of 31% at this stage.

Rishabh Pant has restricted himself here. He is being smart about his batting now, he understands his game a bit better.

There have been times where he has been aggressive and thrown his wicket away, but now he knows he has to play with some responsibility.

  10. Ind 262-3published at 66 overs

Bashir's over goes for three runs, a single for Pant and a Gill two to backward point.

The England spinner is going at 2.78 an over, which isn't to be sniffed at.

Our seamers are good in English conditions unfortunately Leeds today is more Brisbane than Yorkshire

Pant is just settling in with his skipper. They want to build a partnership and get themselves to 300.

    They've got no rush.

  13. Ind 259-3published at 65 overs

Bit of a freebie to start from Woakes and Gill doesn't need asking twice, cutting a wide delivery to the ropes backward of point.

I like this bowling from Bashir, he has a plan. You have to give the seamers a rest sometimes and create some chances.

He is learning on the job and has slotted into a nice rhythm here.

  15. Ind 253-3published at 64 overs

Another maiden for Bashir - his fourth from 13 overall - bowling to Rishabh Pant.

And we will now have a change - Chris Woakes is going to replace Ben Stokes.

It sounds like that ball has gone a bit soft, a bit balloon like. Ben Stokes is still steaming in, trying to get that next breakthrough.

England have just got to get stuck in here, they have hung in well.

  18. Ind 253-3published at 63 overs

Another boundary for Gill, turning Stokes off his legs for four through fine leg.

No change of bowling yet for England - it's been exclusively the pair of Bashir and Stokes since tea.

  19. Ind 247-3published at 62 overs

Remember to sign your messages folks - we've had a lot of anonymous comments today.

It's like being surrounded by a Greek chorus, except rather than making portentous comments about King Creon's treatment of Antigone, they're whispering critiques of England's seam attack.

Anyway, Shubman Gill cracks Bashir's penultimate delivery through long-on for four - the first boundary since the 53rd over.

The gap - with no disrespect - between our seam attack and other top teams is huge. Stokes is arguably our best, followed maybe by Atkinson. Compare that to Australia, India or South Africa a we are a way off. A fully fit Archer, Atkinson, Carse and Stokes changes that, but not sure if that’ll be a reality any time soon.
