Stokes is one of those bowlers where the ball looks quicker and gathers speed once he's bowled it. And it always carries beautifully.

  2. Ind 243-3published at 61 overs

Stokes drags a play and a miss out of Gill, sending a delivery away from the India captain.

Gill then scores the only run of the over with a push to backward square leg.

It's a sign of confidence to see Bashir coming round the wicket and changing it up. It shows that you are in control of your plans.

There's not much you can do on the first day as a spinner.

    • 0.53° - Overs 41-50

Other than the period at the back end of the second session, there's been a bit of swing on offer throughout the day.

And three singles off Bashir's 11th over - he's gone for 0-32 thus far.

Ben Stokes is going to have another over.

I am concerned about Ben Stokes bowling too much. He would bowl for you all day.

    Don't go bust.

  8. Ind 239-3published at 59 overs

Stokes continues to charge in, with the India batters rather circumspect in their approach to the England captain.

Three singles taken, and no boundaries in 6.1 overs now.

I think Anon 14:28 lives in cloud cuckoo land. India will almost certainly get 300+ (likely 400) and then our occasionally brittle batting will have to contend with Bumrah and Co. Doomed.

Bashir rattles through another over, a pair of singles from it.

Having smashed his second ball for four, Rishabh Pant has nine from 19 deliveries thus far.

Have people calmed down? So very quick to criticise England. Two more quick ones and England suddenly favourites

I'm not sure I've ever seen Ben Stokes bowl one of those moon-style slower balls before. When he spoke to the press yesterday, he said he's been able to work on his bowling skills, rather than simply battle to get fit.

That was a slower ball from round the wicket from Stokes and Pant played it like your grandmother playing French cricket in the garden.

    It so nearly got through.

  14. Ind 234-3published at 57 overs

    Oooh, crikey.

Ben Stokes sends down a slower ball that befuddles Rishabh Pant, who just about manages to jam his bat on the dipping delivery and save his wicket.

He takes a single, but was very nearly out.

Bashir has bowled well here. He has been criticised but he has been really good with his length and line today.

I know Stokes as captain likes to show confidence in his picks, in this case Bashir, but surely it’s worth giving Joe Root a go with another left-handed batter at the crease?

    Andy in Northants.

  17. Ind 231-3published at 56 overs

Shubman Gill turns Bashir's first delivery through square leg for two, but fails to score off the five deliveries that follow.

A tidy over from the England spinner.

  18. Ind 229-3published at 55 overs

Three singles from Ben Stokes' ninth over, all on the leg side.

It is great to have Ben Stokes bowling with pace and aggression again. He can always change a game bowling like this.

The wicket ball was only the second delivery bowled by Ben Stokes that would've hit the stumps today.
