That is the third time Matthew Potts has dismissed Smith in all formats since the start of 2024, the same number as Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

What a shot for four. Potts will blame the fact he was made to wait.

It was a bit too wide from Potts especially with the field back to normal for a white-ball game.

  3. Fire 68-2published at 40 balls

Matthew Potts is all smiles despite his hat-trick ball being thrashed away for four by Tom Abell!

Too wide and Abell was all over it.

Two from the last ball of the five but after taking those two wickets, Potts and Superchargers will be delighted with that set.

The anticipation builds as we have a delay while a helmet is brought out so a fielder can go in at short leg for the hat-trick ball...

Potts is pumped up. He ran away with a finger in the air.

He has been kept out of the England side this summer so he looks happy to show his stuff now.

  6. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 38 balls

    Wells c Pepper b Potts 0 (Fire 62-2)

Two in two for Matthew Potts - he's on a hat-trick!

He drags his length back a little and angles this across the left-handed Luke Wells.

The new batter pushes at it and edges behind to Michael Pepper.

Fire skipper Tom Abell will come in to face the hat-trick ball...

Smith tried the Joe Root reverse scoop. Potts has cleverly targeted the leg-stump line so Smith had very little to do.

Good ball, good delivery. Potts possibly saw it coming.

  8. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 37 balls

    Smith b Potts 29 (Fire 62-1)

Australia's Steve Smith is bowled by England's Matthew Potts!

Not a shot that Smith will look back on with much fondness as he tries to reverse scoop a full, straight delivery.

He misses, Potts hits and Superchargers have broken the opening stand. They needed that.

It does feel top heavy the Welsh Fire line up. Superchargers need wickets quickly.

This is developing into a strong start for the Fire.

  10. Fire 61-0published at 35 balls

    Shot!

Thumped off the back foot over extra cover by Jonny Bairstow. Great shot but a clear sign that this is a pretty good track for batting.

Nine from Imad Wasim's latest five.

  11. Fire 52-0published at 30 balls

    Smith 25, Bairstow 26

No joy for Adil Rashid this time with the Fire openers happy to deal in ones and twos in his opening five.

The fifty partnership is up, though, and the visitors are going along very nicely.

Jonny Bairstow registered scores of 44 (39) and 56 (36) in his two previous Welsh Fire appearances at Headingley, he's off to a fast start today too.

Powerplay over and it's time for a bit of Adil Rashid. Can the England leg-spinner break this dangerous opening stand?

Exquisite timing from Steve Smith. He just stands still and flicks it off his pads into the ground for six.

He is much better when he stays still.

  15. 6 runs

    Fire 46-0published at 25 balls

Having just got himself into a tangle trying something a bit inventive, Steve Smith goes back to basics.

Solid base and he whips the ball flat over the the leg side for six.

It gets worse for Matthew Potts as Smith heaves the ball leg side for four more. Ugly shot but effective.

A single follows and that's the end of the powerplay.

The sales of six of the eight franchises in The Hundred were completed last month, with Oval Invincibles and Trent Rockets still in the process of being sold.

Four teams are, or will be, owned by companies with stakes in Indian Premier League (IPL) sides, while the other four are supported by American investment.

Investors will take operational control from 1 October, meaning they will have no direct involvement in this year's competition.

There is definitely a different dynamic this year with the high stakes owners milling around the ground.

It's almost as if they are surveying their kingdoms.

  18. Fire 34-0published at 20 balls

Mohammad Amir is up and will complete his set - but there's no sympathy from Jonny Bairstow.

He pulls the first ball back away for four and then adds a single to make it 11 from the injury interrupted five-ball set.

On watching the replay, that looks so sore.

They are strapping him up but I'm not sure how much that will help.

  20. Postpublished at 18:45 British Summer Time 7 August

We've just seen a slow-mo replay of the incident and no wonder Mohammad Amir is still down.

The ball was hit very firmly and bounced up to hit just above the boot, low on the shin around the ankle.

A painful one and his foot is being strapped up as I type.
