BTW, England were 21-2 on the first morning here 18 months ago. They were 21-3, too.

Time for Joe Root, who advances down the pitch to his first ball and is hit on the thigh.

He then wiggles his bat a little towards the ball as Henry sends a delivery past his outside edge.

That's four back-to-back maidens from Matt Henry and two wickets to go with it, what a way to start the Test.

Crawley's innings comes to an end.

Having flailed at numerous deliveries in this innings, he's bowled defending as Henry clips the top of his stumps, the ball slipping between bat and pad.

He departs for 17 from 23, having connected with a couple but missed a whole lot more.

The way Bethell defends right under his nose & how he brings the bat face down reminds me very much of Graham Thorpe. If he has half the career of the great man England have uncovered a gem.

  6. Eng 21-1published at 7 overs

Bethell picks up his first boundary, a lovely late cut off Southee that races to the ropes.

The only scoring shot of the over, but a nice way to get off the mark.

England's earliest sixes in first innings of a Test, before Crawley's today:

    • Second ball of second over - Arthur Milton, off India's Surendranath, Trent Bridge 1959
    • Second ball of second over - Michael Vaughan, off New Zealand's Chris Drum, Christchurch 2001-02
    • Fifth ball of third over - Herbert Sutcliffe, off South Africa's Bob Crisp, Trent Bridge 1935

The only other time an England player has hit a six in the first over of a Test innings was Cyril Washbrook, in the fourth inns v South Africa at Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha in 1948-49. It was off the seventh ball and the bowler was Cuan McCarthy.

  8. Eng 17-1published at 6 overs

    This is all rather chaotic.

Matt Henry gets his first bite at Crawley and twice sees the England opener attempt huge shots across the line, advancing down the wicket in an attempt to loft the New Zealand seamer into the stands.

He doesn't get hold of either, and Henry is still yet to concede a run.

There is pressure on Southee - he looked innocuous when the ball stopped moving and I think England think they can get after him. Brook hit him onto the pavilion in Christchurch.

Tim Southee is a good bowler, a wily bowler, but he needs that bit of nip and if he's lost that pace, he comes onto the bat nicely.

  11. Eng 17-1published at 5 overs

Zak Crawley continues to walk a fine line.

He unleashes a gigantic air shot to Southee, then unfurls a glorious cover drive for four.

Just settling in to a night shift, had a moment to get the cricket up and a wicket promptly falls. Shall I go away?

Here comes the prodigy, then - Jacob Bethell comes to the crease off an unbeaten 50 in Christchurch.

He fails to score from the remaining four balls of the over and is struck on the pads from his second ball, but there's no appeal from the New Zealand fielders.

Consecutive maidens to start from Matt Henry.

Matt Henry has hit his length and his line straightaway to put pressure on Ben Duckett.

That is the absolute dream for both the bowler and the catcher.

New Zealand dropped them all at Hagley Oval but start well at the Basin Reserve. A very handy early wicket.

    Duckett c Latham b Henry 0 (Eng 12-1)

    Duckett goes without scoring!

The England opener faces his eighth ball from Matt Henry and offers an edge to the slips.

It looks like the ball might just die in front of the cordon, but the ball just about reaches captain Tom Latham at second slip who takes a good catch down low.

  16. Eng 12-0published at 3 overs

And here's perhaps the downside of Zak Crawley.

He picks up two through point from the first ball of Southee's second over, then goes a'driving and twice fails to get bat on ball.

Southee swings one away, then Crawley swings past a straight one that just about bounces over the stumps.

In terms of sixes in the the first over of the first innings in a Test, Zak Crawley's was only the third.

Chris Gayle hit the other two, off ball one and four against Bangladesh in 2012.

Gayle's sixes were off Sohag Gazi, who is a spinner, so Crawley's is the first recorded instance of a six off a pacer in the first over of a Test.

It was only his 11th six in Tests, and third off a seamer.

Matt Henry is straight into the groove at the other end, twice jagging the ball past the bat of Ben Duckett.

The second, the final delivery of the over, is an absolute jaffa - it just did slightly too much having left Duckett scrambling.

A maiden to start us off from Henry.

A reminder of Zak Crawley's head-to-head against New Zealand's opening bowlers so far in Tests (at the start of play)...

Tim Southee: 59 runs, four dismissals, 14.75 average

Matt Henry: 19 runs, four dismissals, 4.75 average
