Well that escalated quickly. Might see England dismissed today if we are unlucky...

    Brook continues to attack!

He backs off again and smack Smith through backward point for four, then finishes off with a pull shot on the swivel that fires the ball to the boundary.

20 runs from that Smith over, with a bye, a wide and a couple of runs off a no-ball also featuring.

As a reminder, Ben Stokes said he would have batted first had England won the toss. It can't have been the plan to bat like this?

    Ah, now that's huge.

Brook backs away to line-up Nathan Smith and heaves him away for a big six over the covers.

There's a delay before a man in a colourful shirt emerges with the ball and pops it back to the sub fielder.

    No, he survives.

A tap and run to the leg side from Brook, the non-striker Pope hustles through for a single.

Bethell was completely suckered in. Two straight drives for four, so the man goes back on the hook. Next ball is short, and Bethell looks for the pull. Until that point he had been the calmest man in the room.

Ollie Pope gets a boundary from his first delivery, flicking Smith off his pads and to the ropes.

    Four, four, gone!

Bethell strikes Smith for consecutive boundaries, punching down into the ground and over the head of the bowler then following up with a drive through long-off, but departs from the next delivery.

He tries to pull a ball running across him and gloves behind to Blundell, who snaffles the ball diving down the leg side.

Reminiscent of the dismissal of James Anderson that finished the dramatic Test at this ground last year.

Joe Root's last three first-innings scores are five (Rawalpindi v Pakistan), zero (Christchurch v New Zealand) and three (Wellington v New Zealand).

It is the first time in his Test career he has had three consecutive single-figure in the first innings.

Henry troubles Brook with another swinging ball past the bat, then fires in a yorker that the England number five blocks out.

Brook strikes back though, clubbing the ball through the legs of Bethell for two and then crashing a first boundary flat and hard through the covers.

New Zealand's new-ball quicks have been deadly accurate with the new ball here with 62% of deliveries hitting a good length.

In comparison England only hit a good length 39% of the time in the first 10 overs on day one at Christchurch.

Both have had similar levels of seam movement to work with (0.83° for England, 0.85° for New Zealand).

  14. Eng 27-3published at 11 overs

    Oooof, close.

Harry Brook tries a Crawley-esque booming drive from his second delivery and is not far from edging behind.

He takes his first run from the final ball of the over with a thick edge down to fine leg.

    Plucked from the air!

It's a fantastic catch from Daryl Mitchell at first slip to remove Joe Root - he seems a little late on it initially, but then pulls off a superb reaction dive to his right to snaffle the edge.

For the second Test in a row, Nathan Smith dismisses Joe Root, and England are most certainly in trouble early on in Wellington.

Matt Henry finally concedes a run from the opening ball of his fifth over, as Joe Root drives into the covers.

It's a long boundary and the ball comes to a halt just short of the ropes, with the England batters running three.

Bethell picks up a further two with an edge through backward square, before Henry sends down another pearler that beats his outside edge.

However wild Crawleys innings was, that was a great ball and one you can’t be too upset getting out by.

Past the outside edge, then past the inside one!

A fine start to Nathan Smith, who befuddles Jacob Bethell with consecutive deliveries after coming into the attack in place of Southee.

The all-rounder gets down well to block off Bethell's drive off his final delivery, securing a maiden of his own.
