  1. Eng 122-4published at 25 overs

For the second time in the innings, Smith swaps back in for Southee.

Pope drops one in front of him and Brook calls him through for a single, Smith gathers and throws in mid-air... just wide of the stumps.

Would have been out with a direct hit.

Since his debut in Test cricket, Will O'Rourke has hit a batter in either the body, helmet or glove with 23 deliveries - only Jasprit Bumrah (25 balls) and Gus Atkinson (24 balls) have done so more frequently.

  3. Eng 119-4published at 24 overs

Pope cracks a shot off his toes, but it's cut off at the square boundary - just a single.

Harry Brook likes it, oh does he like it.

He really likes that one. That was an absolute beauty.

    Crash, bang, fifty!

Brook fires O'Rourke's first ball right along the ground for four through long-off, then lifts his third delivery a little wider for a second six of the innings.

He eases the next ball down through backward point to bring up his half-century off 47 balls.

    A remarkable player.

  6. Eng 107-4published at 23 overs

Brook takes a single off Southee, sending the ball to point for the one run of the over.

Pope chops the ball onto his feet later in the over, seemingly keen on hurting both his fingers and his toes.

Of the 20 Test matches in New Zealand since the start of 2020 only one Test has had a higher PitchViz rating in the first session of day one than today's 8.5 (the higher the score the more difficult it is to bat).

As well as swing and seam there's a touch of variable bounce contributing to a higher rating, a rarity for this early in a Test match in New Zealand.

At the fall of the fourth wicket, I said that I'd watch one more go down and then go to bed. I'm hoping that Brook and Pope will be to blame for my tiredness at work tomorrow, and that the kids in my class understand!

Up comes England's hundred as Brook knocks O'Rourke's second ball into the covers for a single.

A delivery clips Pope and runs away for four through fine leg before O'Rourke closes the over with consecutive fiery balls, twice striking Pope on the gloves.

On comes the physio to deliver some magic spray.

Is 99-4 a good score or a bad score? As ever in Test cricket, it depends on what happens next. And that’s why I love it.

Southee slips one between Pope's bat and pad, but the England number six comes back with a four off his legs from the following delivery.

We've seen a boundary off all but the first of Southee's six overs in this match, his economy rate's a touch over six.

It's been an enthralling first session. It's been typical England.

From the bowlers' point of view it's done just a little bit. Swung a bit, seamed a bit - nothing massive but just enough. As a bowler, you always feel in the game.

For the second over in a row, just a single off O'Rourke's six balls, with Brook edging to fine leg off the last of the seamer's deliveries.

The false shot data for the opening phase is interesting.

Jacob Bethell was dismissed in 13th over and in that phase, CricViz data shows 42% false shot percentage (33 out of 78 balls - 19 plays and misses, 14 edges).

That's the highest false shot percentage in that phase of a Test innings ever recorded by England (data is available for over 400 innings, since 2006).

It is also in top 10 by any team (more than 2,800 innings recorded).

  15. Eng 93-4published at 19 overs

Back comes Tim Southee, who had a short spell of four overs at the top of the innings.

Pope sends him for consecutive fours through third and backward point, before a Brook single into the covers brings up the 50 partnership from 37 balls.

As BH says below, Brook and Pope did turn England around in the first innings in Christchurch, taking their side from 71-4 to 222-5 in the space of just 31 overs.

    More of the same today?

Just a single off O'Rourke's second over as Brook inside edges through backward square.

The New Zealand seamer then whistles a delivery past Pope's bat - can't have been much more than a couple of millimetre away.

  19. Eng 81-4published at 17 overs

Smith sends down four dot balls to Pope before the England keeper flicks a delivery square for three, a fielder on the ropes denying him a boundary.

He then retains the strike with a single through point.

  20. Eng 77-4published at 16 overs

First sight of Will O'Rourke as Matt Henry's superb opening spell comes to a close after seven overs.

Brook lashes his second ball for four through backward point, beating the diving Devon Conway on the boundary.
