We've got a break in play because one of the floodlights has gone out.

England's players are taking it is a cue for a drink.

Jos Buttler has done his best to be the smiley, cheery Jos Buttler during this series but a pained expression sneaks onto his face as Shubman Gill slices one for four more.

If the edges are going for four too...

Most of Rohit Sharma's recent failures have come in the Test format. In ODIs since the start of 2023, Rohit has scored 965 runs in the first 10 overs at an average of 80.4 and at a strike rate of 124.

Amongst batters who have scored at least 200 runs in this phase of the innings, Rohit's strike rate is second only to Travis Head's (130).

Shubman Gill, on the hand, averages 106.7 in this phase (best in the world) at a strike rate of 97. Ominous signs for England here.

How long does Jos Buttler wait before introducing a spinner?

He'll want to have the fielders out in the deep which suggests not until after the powerplay. But can he wait that long? What if the dew comes down later?

Now bowler and non-striking batter and both face down in the dirt after the ball was driven back.

Atkinson looks at his hand as his picks himself back up. It has not been the start England needed.

  8. Ind 26-0published at 3.3 overs

    It's all going on.

Gus Atkinson bowls a wide, Phil Salt fumbles and Shubman Gill sets off for a bye.

The ball has been deflected to short fine leg and Rohit Sharma sends his team-mate back. Adil Rashid misses with the throw.

It would have been out with a hit.

Saqib Mahmood grimaces after being pulled for the second boundary in the over, this time off the bat of Shubman Gill.

The lady on the PA is revving the home crowd up.

"We love?!" she shouts. "RO-HIT!" the crowd replies in deafening unison.

    That's the Rohit we know.

Gus Atkinson v Rohit Sharma may be a new-ball battle we see in the Test series later this year, if Rohit can make it. He has been in horrible form recently.

As I say that he slashes a four but then flicks a glorious six over mid-wicket - looking like peak Rohit Sharma as he does.

Cuttack is very loud all of a sudden.

  12. Ind 1-0published at 1 over

India have shunted Shubman Gill up a place to open, having brought Virat Kohli in for Yashasvi Jaiswal.

That means India are opening with batters who have hit four ODI double centuries between them.

It's a good start from Saqib Mahmood.

Jamie Overton, with something to prove after his batting struggles, is possibly the tallest slip fielder I've ever seen.

Rohit is stunned a wide hasn't been awarded early.

Both captains anticipated this pitch slowing down, so runs on the board are key and Jos Buttler's batters laid the foundations.

304 feels like a good score on this pitch. The only question is the darkness coming over the ground - will it become easier to bat on?

  15. Ind 0-0published at 12:16 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

Remember England have rested Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse so their pace line-up is Mark Wood, Saqib Mahmood, Gus Atkinson and Jamie Overton.

Mahmood is going to bowl the first over.

England started well. Phil Salt and Ben Duckett put on 81 inside 11 overs for the first wicket, capitalising on some loose bowling.

England were never quite able to kick on after Duckett fell for 65 from 56 balls, however.

Joe Root made 69, Harry Brook 31, Jos Buttler 34 and Liam Livingstone 41.

We spoke at the end of the first ODI about setting a foundation early and letting England's batters have a go at the end.

Any time you get over 300, you're in the game. It's all about the first 10-15 overs of England's bowling.

The only way we were getting 30/40 more was to massively accelerate but hitting big on this pitch looks very tricky. Every time England went for the big shot that’s when wickets were lost. I don’t think 304 is below par. The key now will be scoreboard pressure.

This is the 10th time England have posted a 300+ total batting first against India in ODIs, in the previous nine instances they have won six and lost three. In India, in particular, they have won two and lost one (in Pune in 2017, defending 351).
