304 is a decent total, notwithstanding the small boundaries, but England’s bowlers will need to use change up deliveries if they’re to extract the slight unevenness of bounce that is clearly there.

It’s a defendable target but they will have to bowl very well, and they’re without Archer and again only have one frontline spinner.

I think England are about 20 runs below par on the surface they were batting.

The issue could be that if the dew does arrive, stopping the ball spinning and making it skid on, that could look like 40 below before long.

  3. 'Hopefully it spins and gets worse'published at 11:51 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

England opener Ben Duckett: "It felt like a pretty good surface, the odd ball keeping low. Interesting to see if dew takes over and it gets better, or hopefully it spins and it gets worse."

On his partnership with Phil Salt: "It's great, most of the time I feel like he's the one who's going to get is off to a flier and I'll play second fiddle. But we're early and we're learning."

"I think when you get 300 it's a decent total, it's pretty quick scoring here."

England are in the game at least.

Would they have hoped for more at 248-4 in the 43rd over? Absolutely.

They have to hold onto the fact this pitch was not straightforward. It was slow and the bounce was uneven at times.

The worry will be that the dew could come in and make things easier for the batters.

How does one assess that innings from England? There were good signs of progress in the middle overs as Root, Brook and Buttler steadily accumulated, but once again batters got out just as they had set the platform for an assault.

Out by a couple of inches.

Liam Livingstone got a couple of boundaries away but never quite found the groove.

Now number 11 Saqib Mahmood has to come out with two balls to go.

Liam Livingstone desperately tries to sprint back again.

He dives full-length to make his ground but India think he's out.

I’ll say it now. England are 30 short. Remind me of this later please when we win by 30 runs.

This would have been an extraordinary catch.

    Rashid run out (Jadeja/Rana) 14 (Eng 297-8)

    England's dangerman is out.

Adil Rashid turns for a second after Liam Livingstone flicks to square leg but Livingstone never fancied it.

Ravi Jadeja is electric and even though the throw goes to the wrong end there's still plenty of time to run out Rashid as Harshit Rana transfers the ball to keeper KL Rahul.

Adil Rashid has now come out to bat in 22 of his last 26 ODIs (85% of the time). Between 2016 and 2019, he had come out to bat on 30 occasions in 79 ODIs (38% of the time).

Adil Rashid making a mockery of his No.9 batting status. I'll never forgive Overton for denying him the strike due to his misplaced arrogance on this tour.

    Ken Adams, Lancashire

To think Overton was "protecting" Rashid in games gone by.

Liam Livingstone sends a slower ball over mid-wicket.

  20. Eng 288-7published at 48 overs

Harshit Rana is going to bowl the penultimate over. He begins with a wide but is not happy with the decision.

Skipper Rohit Sharma has come in to complain too. They reckon Livingstone had stepped across his stumps and are probably right.
