That was just tossed up a bit by Jack Leach, trying to invite that shot.

But Naseem Shah sees it early, advances and opens up the off side. It's easier for tailenders to just free their arms towards the leg, but he's showing some batting acumen today.

England try to tempt Naseem Shah into hitting over the off side - and he is happy to oblige.

With long-off brought up to mid-off, Naseem skips down and hammers Jack Leach over that very region.

His third six and it is getting increasingly desperate for England.

  3. Pak 381-4published at 104 overs

As if things weren't frustrating enough for England, an increasingly confident Naseem Shah is now doing his best Steve Smith/Marnus Labuschagne impression.

Exaggerated movement and loud calls after blocking or leaving the ball.

Come on, Naseem, no one needs that after such an early start...

It will be more than frustrating for England. We are almost 90 minutes into the session and they have not got rid of the nightwatchman Naseem Shah.

They would've wanted to capitalise on that touch of movement that we saw earlier, but that lateral movement has now gone and they are resorting to the short-ball plan.

It's largely been an innings of defence and denial from Naseem Shah, but that's a free swing of the bat and he's made very good contact as well.

It's been slow going so far on day two but Naseem Shah has livened things up with a couple of hefty blows.

The nightwatcher is starting to look more comfortable, certainly against the spinners.

England needed wickets at the start of the day. Their need is getting ever greater as the overs tick by the Pakistan total builds.

    Big hit from Naseem Shah!

He charges Jack Leach and muscles it a long way over the long on boundary.

That brings up the fifty partnership as well.

No joy for Shoaib Bashir this morning, so here comes Jack Leach.

What can the left-arm spinner produce?

You could argue that Pakistan are sapping the energy off England bowlers now, so there's going to be none left for later when the batters come in.

With the field set for bouncers and very few players in front of square, Saud Shakeel is able to pick up two with a defensive push into the covers.

Brydon Carse almost gave chase himself off his own bowling before crumpling to the deck.

I'm not sure if he slipped or realised that was the best way to avoid running given he couldn't have stopped the two anyway.

Having been targeted relentlessly by short balls at the other end, Naseem Shah wants to attack the spin of Shoaib Bashir.

He's already pumped him for one six and advances again looking for another.

No timing on this occasion, just a hack leg side for a single. But that could be where the opportunity comes for England.

It's twice Naseem Shah's been hit now. But he's still there.

  13. Pak 366-4published at 100 overs

Another delay as Brydon Carse raps Naseem Shah on the right hand with a back of a length delivery.

The nightwatcher gives his hand a shake and out comes the physio. Naseem looks in a bit of pain but his glove is quickly back on and he's ready to carry on.

The last ball shoots off the thigh pad and is juggled, then dropped by Joe Root at slip.

He can laugh about it but I imagine the reaction would have been rather different had there been any bat on that!

    In truth, not a lot.

England have not been able to make a breakthrough in the first hour.

Nightwatcher Naseem Shah has played and missed and been hit on the helmet but is still there.

Saud Shakeel has looked totally at ease. He reached his fifty from 96 balls.

Pakistan added 35 runs in the first hour.

It's been a relatively slow morning for both the teams, I feel. The annoying thing for England is that Naseem Shah is still out there in the middle and Pakistan have laid that foundation again.

Just one from Shoaib Bashir's over and it's time for drinks.

A good first hour for Pakistan, who have kept England's bowlers at bay so far.

Frustration for the tourists, who have beaten the bat more in that hour than they managed the whole of yesterday but have nothing to show for their efforts.

The concern is the chances have come pretty much exclusively against Naseem Shah so even when they eventually get him, it is only likely to get tougher with established batters Muhammad Rizwan and Salman Agha to follow.

I am thinking whether Rehan Ahmed would have been a better option for England. On such surfaces, a wrist spinner could have been a better option compared to a left-arm spinner and an off-spinner.

So I was just wondering if England would change gear and have a look at him in the second or third Test match.

Brydon Carse comes on for his first spell of the day and there is a big appeal for caught behind second ball.

It was a short ball - of course - that didn't get up too much and slid down leg. But did Naseem Shah tickle it through to Jamie Smith?

After a quick chat, England decide not. Good call, it brushed thigh pad rather than bat.

Saud Shakeel is an excellent player of spin bowling and this is a really accomplished innings. He can play the sweep, the cover drive and uses his feet as well.

His track record in Test cricket is mighty impressive.

  20. 50 runs

50 for Saud Shakeelpublished at 97 overs

    Pak 360-4

Super sweep shot from Saud Shakeel and that takes him to his seventh Test fifty.

A wonderfully composed knock so far, he's not looked troubled at all and his sixth boundary gets him to the milestone from 96 balls.
