    Pak 353-4published at 96.2 overs

Naseem Shah is going to take on the spinner.

He shuffles down to Shoaib Bashir and thumps the ball back over his head for six.

    Nicely struck by the right-hander.

England have induced 14 false strokes off the 40 deliveries that they have bowled to Naseem Shah so far but without success.

  3. Pak 349-4published at 96 overs

Naseem Shah is OK to continue and, treated to a delivery that pitches in his half of the wicket, he throws a bat at it and sends an outside edge down towards deep third.

It lands safely before Saud Shakeel blocks the last ball of the over. That might be it for Gus Atkinson's spell, he's bowled five overs so far this morning.

  4. Pak 348-4published at 95.2 overs

Gus Atkinson has clocked Naseem Shah on the back of the helmet with a bouncer.

Thankfully, Naseem looks to be OK but there will be a slight delay for a concussion test.

There will be plenty more short stuff when play resumes with the field now set for a bouncer barrage.

The decision to send Naseem Shah as a nightwatchman has worked very well for Pakistan. I am not a big fan of it, because I think sending in a tailender disrupts the flow of the innings.

But he's fronted up to the second new ball here and that has meant more frustration for England. They would have wanted a batter in.

Solid enough start for young Shoaib Bashir.

Just a couple of runs from the over but no immediate sign of the ball suddenly turning square.

We've seen enough in the first 40 minutes this morning to say with some confidence that it is going to be a grind for the bowlers again on day two.

  7. Pak 346-4published at 94.1 overs

    Spin time.

Shoaib Bashir is on to replace Chris Woakes. There has been talk of the cracks on the pitch opening up a bit, will that lead to more turn?

    Let's find out.

It's been much more positive from an England prospective so far today. Lots of opportunities, but that wicket is still eluding them.

  9. Pak 346-4published at 94 overs

Good stuff from Gus Atkinson as he works over Naseem Shah.

He tests him out with a short ball before finishing with a much fuller delivery, angling in and moving a fraction to go past the edge.

Still no joy for England on day two so far, though.

    Andy Zaltzman
    Statistician on Test Match Special

Naseem Shah has faced 27 balls here. Over his Test career, his average balls per dismissal is 26. So he's been stubborn for Pakistan on several occasions as a tailender.

It's not much but Chris Woakes is still managing to get a hint of shape from this second new ball.

He squares Saud Shakeel up slightly from round the wicket but the edge goes quickly to ground and is wide of gully to earn the left-hander two.

England have already changed the field with catchers coming in in front of the wicket and a leg slip there, too.

That is a welcome boundary for Pakistan and Naseem Shah, who moves one run shy of his highest Test score.

  13. Pak 344-4published at 92 overs

Runs for Naseem Shah as a thick outside edge runs away down to deep third.

Gus Atkinson beats him with a tempter to end the over, Naseem reached for it but missed by a mile.

There was a muted appeal for caught behind but, thankfully, no review. You could see in real time, and replays confirmed it, that he missed that by a mile.

Yes, there really is a huge banner with Andy Zaltzman's face on it hanging from the stand in the Inzamam-ul-Haq enclosure above the dressing rooms at the far end of the ground.

  15. Pak 339-4published at 91.2 overs

Gus Atkinson finds Naseem Shah's outside edge with a good length delivery on a probing line.

But it's played with soft enough hands by the nightwatchman and the ball bounces a yard or two short of second slip.

Pakistan are in a perfect scenario to get a monster score here. But one thing they won't be doing if they get to 600 is declaring.

They have learned that lesson the hard way against Bangladesh.

  17. Pak 339-4published at 91 overs

While Saud Shakeel is calmly going about his work, it's been all about survival for Naseem Shah.

In that regard, he's started well and the longer he stays out there, the more overs go into the England bowlers legs.

It could make all the difference later in the match, or indeed, the series.

England captain Ollie Pope is fielding at deep square leg. Maybe he's gone there to collect his thoughts, think about his next tactics.

  19. Pak 337-4published at 90 overs

As if to prove how placid this pitch still is, Gus Atkinson bangs one in short to Saud Shakeel, who effortlessly pulls it out to deep mid-wicket for a single.

Once this ball stops swinging - and let's be clear, it's not exactly going round corners now - and softens up, things will get even trickier for England.

An early breakthrough could be key.

Another good over from Chris Woakes and he challenges Naseem Shah again in the five balls he has at him.

He beats the bat again early in the over but Naseem is sticking at it.
