You just wonder if cooler heads could have prevailed in what was almost certainly a chaotic England dressing room during that innings break. Pope has had enough on his plate for almost two days and has never before opened in first-class cricket. Root has opened lots in Test cricket. I know it was a stunning catch, but...

    Beautifully played by Joe Root.

Shaheen Afridi overpitches and Root shows it the full face of the bat, through the vacant mid-off region for four.

Big appeal for lbw last ball and it looked close if Root didn't get any bat on it... no review so Pakistan must think he hit it.

Yep, inside edge to save England's premier batter.

That Aamer Jamal catch gets better with every viewing. He just plucked it out of the air when it seemed sure to fly past him.

Anyway, Joe Root is in at three and gets off the mark with a three first ball.

Full from Naseem Shah and Root just eases it through the covers.

Shot! Zak Crawley punches the last ball of the over gloriously through the off side for four.

Ollie Pope's luck has not carried on here in Pakistan. When you are not in form and can't score, things like that seem to happen to you. He's been dismissed by an absolute screamer by Aamer Jamal.

What a catch! Unbelievable from Aamer Jamal.

Short from Naseem Shah and Ollie Pope is onto it in a flash.

He makes a good connection with the pull shot but it's in the air and Jamal dives from mid-wicket to take a stunning one-handed catch.

The England skipper, promoted to open in Ben Duckett's absence, goes second ball.

That was a lively first over and pretty hostile from Pakistan - some genuine pace from Shaheen Shah Afridi.

  9. Eng 4-0published at 1 over

Full but far too wide from Shaheen Afridi and Zak Crawley opens the face of the bat to get England up and running with a boundary.

    Nicely played.

It's nice to see Zak Crawley back at the top of the order for England after missing out since a broken finger against West Indies.

  11. Eng 0-0published at 0.1 overs

Full and straight from Shaheen Afridi first up, trying to swing the ball back in to the right-hander.

I could have written that out before the match even started.

We all knew it was coming, Zak Crawley included, and he is forward to defend.

Stop your speculation, we have actual news, and even with Bazball, sometimes the most obvious solution is the one they plump for.

Skipper Ollie Pope is promoted from number three.

England will hope Ben Duckett can bat later in the innings.

For Ben Duckett to pick up something like that in the last ball of the innings is bad. It didn't look good at all.

  15. Postpublished at 11:53 British Summer Time 8 October

When Zak Crawley and whoever his opening partner turns out to be emerge, England are likely have a little more than an hour and a half to bat before stumps.

How will they approach it? We know how they went about it a couple of years back. Same again and this could be a very watchable passage of play.

Anyway, Salman Ali Agha finishes unbeaten on 104 from 119 balls. A superb knock for him.

It was only really when he was left with number 11 Abrar Ahmed that he suddenly seemed unsure how to play it. Before that he was excellent.

There is a certain player in the team who has 90-odd score whilst opening the batting in Test matches…

I'd say it is now highly unlikely that Ben Duckett will open the batting for England.

Who will open in his place? We won't have to wait too long to find out.

Ben Duckett walks off holding his handImage source, Reuters

Ben Duckett has caught it but he's definitely hurt his thumb though. He's waving towards the dressing room and he's hiding it. This could be difficult - one of England's openers might not be able to bat. Oh dear!

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 149 overs

Abrar c Duckett b Root 3 (Pak 556 all out)

A bouncer works - for the spinner!

It's not all good news for England, though, as Ben Duckett looks to have done himself some damage in taking the catch at slip.

Joe Root banged it in short, Abrar Ahmed tried to guide it away but puts it into the hands of Duckett.

Well, more accurately, onto the end of the thumb of Duckett and he looks in real pain.
