As a Pakistani it's interesting to see England fans' negativity. I can assure you we will find a way to lose this Test, this is little more than cardio for your bowlers and fielders.

What was I saying about Shaheen Afridi only caring about surviving?

Well, he's just given himself room and slapped Shoaib Bashir over extra cover for four.

They're determined to make me look foolish, these cricketers. Not that it's all that tricky.

When Pakistan do declare at some stage today or get all out, they are going to have a lovely little session in the not so searing heat.

The lights are probably going to come on for the last half hour like yesterday when the ball zipped around a bit. So things are going to be in their favour.

  4. Pak 523-8published at 142 overs

We're still waiting for things to heat up again after tea.

Salman Ali Agha is playing positively, but not taking too many risks for now, while Shaheen Afridi's only goal at the moment appears to be survival.

What’s up with Martin (10:58)? Any team would miss Broad and Anderson and it’s not like we never lost Test in the sub-continent with them. The pitch has been like a road and the bowling attack has stuck to there task. Let’s just wait and see.

  6. Pak 520-8published at 141 overs

We're approaching the time when a declaration starts to be mooted.

Pakistan seem content to bat on for a little while yet, I'd say, given Shaheen Afridi has just blocked his way through a maiden from Shoaib Bashir.

  7. Pak 520-8published at 140 overs

Slight miscue from Salman Ali Agha but the ball trickles perfectly into a gap on the leg side and the Pakistan batters are able to sprint back for two.

Salman is up to 83 and you fancy he won't want to hang around in trying to reach three figures.

  8. Pak 516-8published at 139 overs

Just a single from the first over of the session as Shaheen Afridi defends his way through the last four deliveries.

Now it's time for a resumption of the battle between Salman Ali Agha and Jack Leach...

  9. Pak 515-8published at 138.2 overs

Immediate intent from Salman Ali Agha as he advances to Shoaib Bashir and lofts the ball down the ground.

Very straight but not enough on it to make the boundary and he has to settle for a single.

    Good news? Bad news?

Well, it's news... we'll see whether Ben Stokes is fit to play any part in this series in due course.

For now, the players are back out and we're all set for the evening session.

Stokes' bowling session is over and it ended quite abruptly. Whether it just came to a natural conclusion or he felt the hammy is unclear.

  12. How's stat?!published at 11:04 British Summer Time 8 October

    Andy Zaltzman
    Statistician on Test Match Special

It is the first time England have conceded 500 runs since the Rawalpindi Test at the start of their last series when Pakistan made 579 in response to England's 650-plus score.

This is England's 23rd Test since then and their third 500-plus score conceded in this decade so far - the other being at Trent Bridge against New Zealand. Both times, they have gone on to win the Test match.

Possibly, Martin, I think any side would need time to adjust to losing two bowlers of such quality and experience.

But Jimmy Anderson was very much involved the last time England were in Pakistan and, well, we have a related stat...

Pakistan will need to get to 600 before England take note of the lessons I feel. England in my opinion are struggling to adapt to life after Anderson and Broad and there is a fragility that runs through the batting line up (Root excepted). The good news is there will be much learning from these Tests with Pakistan.

Actually, it's more than a few paces. It's quite close to full run, but certainly not running in at full pace. Either way, it's encouraging.

He's very fixated on those bagels and coffee, is Matthew.

Full disclosure, I actually ended up having a cup of tea.

Anyway, England's toil is set to go on for a little while yet with another two wickets still required to wrap up the Pakistan innings.

Oh, and we've got more from Stephan on Ben Stokes being put through his paces...

That may be the best news England have had all day.

They will surely be batting in this final session. Sam Drury, filled up on bagels and coffee, is back to start it.

Ben Stokes is out in the middle during the break. He's bowling off a few paces. Marcus Trescothick has the mitt, Jimmy Anderson watching.

England have toiled away. They've tried to get back in the game, but I fear for when Salman Ali Agha comes back out after the tea when he will try to accelerate for Pakistan.

Overall, this pitch has been a bowler's graveyard so far in this Test match.

  20. Tea - Pak 514-8published at 138 overs

A red-faced Gus Atkinson wipes the sweat from his brow before delivering the final ball of the session.

There were two wickets and 118 runs in that 26-over session.
