Zimbabwe's run rate has dipped under six an over (5.78) for the first time in a while.

Craig Ervine has had a couple of lives early in his innings. This time it's Gus Atkinson who can't believe the ball hasn't hit the stumps.

The one thing that Sam Cook will have to do is keep the length. He doesn't get much pace so every time he delivers it a bit short, it goes flying.

Sam Cook persisting with coming round the wicket to the left-hander, which may play into Craig Ervine’s hands. Across Ervine’s career he averages 64 against right-arm pace delivered from round the wicket, compared to 41 from over the wicket.

  7. Zim 43-1published at 7 overs

Ooooooohs all round as the final delivery of Sam Cook's fourth over whistles just past Craig Ervine's stump.

He's getting into his rhythm now.

  9. Zim 38-1published at 6 overs

Craig Ervine has four centuries and seven fifties from his 25 Test matches to date and he's joined Brian Bennett in the boundary column with a little nudge for four.

The ball is just racing across the outfield.

Mike Bell: How many cricketers share the names of famous singers? I've got Ben (E) King for Singapore, Sam Cook for England, and George Harrison for Yorkshire. Any more?

That's a good ball from Sam Cook, just bounced up and it's a nice simple catch for Harry Brook. We've seen him do this many years at Essex, now he's doing it for England.

'He leaps with delight!' - Cook takes first international test wicket

Sam Cook leaps into the air with delight. He has his first Test wicket, Ben Curran edging into the slips for an easy catch for Harry Brook.

Matt, I think you can take some credit for that.

  15. Zim 31-0published at 4 overs

That's excellent, Matt. Although you'll be disappointed to learn that your Sam Cooke pun has gone over the head of a couple of people in the office.

Chalk up a sixth four on the Brian Bennett boundary-o-meter.

Sam Cook may have conceded a few early boundaries, but I know a change is gonna come.

What a wonderful world this would be if that turns out to be true, Saoirse.

Brian Bennett bags another boundary from Sam Cook's second over, edging past Zak Crawley in the slips.

I wonder if the 86 number on the back of Sam Cook's shirt is a reference to 1986 - the year his name equivalent of singer Sam Cooke was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame! It would be a fun one if true.

Brian Bennett's mindset has been excellent. He's really watching that ball to seek out the right opportunity.

  20. Zim 17-0published at 2 overs

Gus Atkinson opens his spell with his best Mark Wood impression, hitting the deck after releasing the ball.

He later makes a lot of noise as a delivery smashes into Brian Bennett's pad but England opt not to review.

Zimbabwe, it has to be said, have started brightly. Bennett already has four boundaries to his name.
