In his short Test career to date, all of Ben Curran’s dismissals against pace bowling have come when playing off the back foot - England will look to bowl that in between length to him where his is unsure whether to go back or forward.

The last England bowler to take the first over of an innings on their Test debut was James Kirtley, on this ground against South Africa in 2003. It was the fourth innings of the match and Kirtley took 6-34 to bowl England to victory.

This is what Sam Cook does, he bowls nice and full.

It's a full pitch but this is great commitment from Brian Bennett, he's playing it well.

  5. Zim 12-0published at 1 over

Sam Cook has his hands on his head as Brian Bennett nearly edges onto his stumps. Instead, the batter is rewarded with a boundary.

Bennett picks off two more fours in an expensive start to Cook's Test career.

If you're not familiar with the Essex bowler, he spoke to Stephan Shemilt earlier this week.

  6. Zim 0-0published at 0.1 overs

Sam Cook's first ball in Test cricket is driven safely to a fielder by Brian Bennett.

I've liked what England have done, they've just got on with the game.

The ball has definitely done more today though. It will be interesting to see how England do on this surface.

Pitch is looking lively today. Excited to see what Cook can do with the ball, even if this may not be a huge test.

Brian Bennett and Ben Curran are making their way out to the middle.

Sam Cook looks like he's going to take the new ball.

The batting surface has been excellent. We haven't seen any balls stay low, it's bounced a bit but has definitely favored the batters. Albeit the England bowling attack will be much more consistent than Zimbabwe were.

I think Ben Stokes missed a trick there - he should have given the tail-enders a chance to have a bat as it would have been valuable to get batting time out in the middle, as they won’t get that against the Indian company!

Remember, Zimbabwe will need to get 416 to avoid the follow-on and force England to bat again.

It was a hard day at the office for all of the Zimbabwe players. It was raining sixes here today.

It's a sorry looking bowling card for Zimbabwe.

Six, four, and out for Harry Brook.

He's absolutely furious as he chops onto his stumps, swinging his bat in frustration. Blessing Muzarabani, however, is delighted - a third wicket for the Zimbabwean.

Tanaka Chivanga is the one bowler from Zimbabwe who's had beautiful seam delivery. That was a peach of a ball, perfect. There was defiantly a technical deficiency in the way he tried to catch that.

England bring up their 550, Jamie Smith gets off the mark with a nicely timed four through midwicket, and then he's dropped by wicketkeeper Tafadzwaw Tsiga, diving across the slips. It's a poor drop.

The scoreboard flashes up the aesthetically pleasing 555-5.
