Summary

  1. Zim 235-5published at 50 overs

    Bennett 133, Tsiga 13

I will confess that I got a bit distracted during that over because I'm currently getting a lot of stick for making a pasta sauce before work this morning.

Just a single added to the total.

What I love about the Zimbabwe batsmen is that when they hit the ball, it stays hit.

  3. Zim 234-5published at 49 overs

I concur with Vic. After the lively finish the second session, orchestrated by that excellent burst from Ben Stokes, England haven't really looked like taking a wicket after tea.

And with Tsiga's second boundary of the day, we have another aesthetically pleasing scoreline: 234-5.

Brian Bennett is still there; Tafadzwa Tsiga looks quite comfortable. England aren't putting much pressure on Zimbabwe at the moment.

  5. Zim 229-5published at 48 overs

Brian Bennett looks very nonchalant every time the camera pans to him at the non-striker's end. He's added three more to his total.

England should be able to get themselves in a position where they can comfortably win but it will depend on how hard the bowlers work.

  7. Zim 226-5published at 47 overs

Jamie Smith is being kept quite busy behind the stumps. Josh Tongue attempts a bouncer but it drifts harmlessly down Tafadzwa Tsiga's leg side.

And it's a messy end to the over from England, with Tongue bowling a no ball which Shoaib Bashir misfields to gift Tsiga a boundary.

Brian Bennett now has a century in fours.

  9. Zim 219-5published at 46 overs

It's been a quiet start to the evening session, so here's a reminder of those two wickets that Ben Stokes bagged before tea.

Brian Bennett has played a truly sublime innings here. Been a joy to watch and great to see a competitive fight from Zimbabwe in face of a daunting total!

Josh Tongue will share the bowling responsibilities with Sam Cook.

  13. Zim 211-5published at 44 overs

Sam Cook is enjoying his battle with Tafadzwa Tsiga, who finally gets off the mark off the final ball of the over.

That keeps Brian Bennett off strike. I have to say, the longer Bennett stays in, the better, as it increases the likelihood of my colleague Mike Peter giving a second performance of his surprisingly good Alan Bennett impression.

The players are back out. Zimbabwe will resume on 210-5, with Brian Bennett on 122 (112) and Tafadzwa Tsiga on 0 (4).

Sam Cook will bowl the first over after tea.

Brian Bennett might now be one of the best known Bennetts in England, though unfortunately he has yet to surpass Gordon... to everyone's surprise...

The best thing for Test cricket as a whole would be for Zimbabwe to reach somewhere in the region of 300-325. Yes, they would (possibly) have to follow on 200+ behind, but they have shown some real fight and, actually, put England's total into some perspective. This is a batting wicket and 500 is very gettable. Against India, I think we'd all be expecting a draw at this stage. Brian Bennett, take a bow, by the way. What an innings so far.

Thanks Matt. That was an exciting session, wasn't it?

A thoroughly enjoyable century for Brian Bennett and Ben Stokes back among the wickets. Let's hope the evening session can match it.
